No. I don't recommend staying there if you plan to do some sightseeing of CAI. It is better to select a hotel in the city center. The traffic in CAI is crazy and you will be spending a lot of time just commuting from your hotel to touristic sights and back.

I wonder if the latest US electronics ban will affect a journey ex-CAI ?

Presumably not if connecting in e.g. LHR as you would no doubt be rescreened before departure from UK but CAI-DOH-xxx could be a real pain

It seems to be Gulf carriers only, so BA would be fine and QR not so much (then again, QR's cheapest fare CAI-JFK is over $1500++...)

Looks like CAI-LHR is going to be in the UK's sights though

It's already on a banned list. I'm glad I didn't buy positioning flights directly from UK to CAI.

UK to CAI would be fine -- it's CAI to US or UK that's problematic.

Obvious question ---- is there any European city other than London that can be the destination of the first (ex-CAI) flight?

For this routing, luggage must be reclaimed regardless in JFK for example, so it would just be CAI-LHR-JFK where one would have to be without larger electronic devices....

no, but I THINK you might be able to do CAI-LHR-MAD(or perhaps even other cities with direct AA service to the US)-JFK/MIA-wherever for an extra 40TP or a few more miles.

if one had left a laptop (say) in london left luggage one could presumably pick that up in LHR on your way through from CAI to whereever?

I can't see anything in the fare rules that don't allow it, but ITA doesn't seem to find them.

Code:
THE FARE COMPONENT MUST INCLUDE TRAVEL VIA EACH
   TRANSATLANTIC SECTOR ON
ONE OR MORE OF THE FOLLOWING
         ANY BA FLIGHT
         ANY AA FLIGHT
         ANY IB FLIGHT.

2 TRANSFERS PERMITTED IN EACH DIRECTION.
2 PERMITTED VIA BA ONLY IN EUROPE IN EACH
        DIRECTION
2 PERMITTED BETWEEN BA AND IB IN EUROPE IN
        EACH DIRECTION
2 PERMITTED VIA IB ONLY IN EUROPE IN EACH
        DIRECTION
1 PERMITTED BETWEEN AA AND AA/BA/IB IN
        EUROPE IN EACH DIRECTION.
