platinum premier at marriott time share

I recently stayed at a Marriot time share on "hotel" basis (two nights) and was told they did not care what my status was with Marriott, no upgrades etc.

Is this true?

Annerk Sep 10, 2012 3:49 pm

Yup. They don't upgrade at the Vacation Club whether you are paying cash, points, or are an owner. It's pretty clearly spelled out in the fine print on the benefits page of the MR web site.

VickiSoCal Sep 10, 2012 3:55 pm

You are renting a specific vacant unit and it is highly, highly unlikely that you would be upgraded no matter who you are.

No upgrades but the one at Kaanapali in Maui goes have a choice of arrival gifts for Platinums. Don't know if any others do as well.

You tell us.

What did the terms & conditions of the contract to which you agreed say about "perks"? This stuff isn't "fine print" it's a contract. If you sign it without carefully reading it, stuff happens.

Put another way, Marriott doesn't own the unit you rented. It acts as an agent for the unit owner. You pay Marriott, Marriott pays the owner less a fee. You rented Unit 101. If you wanted Unit 102 which is nicer, you should have rented that one.

No contract
Rented as hotel room on Marriott.com with standard reservation language

If you did it online, here is the provision which you agreed to when you "checked" the little "I Accept" box:

6.Complimentary Room Upgrade: Based on room availability at check-in and limited to a Member's personal guestroom. Upgrades may include rooms with desirable views, rooms on high floors, corner rooms, rooms with special amenities, rooms on Executive Floors, or suites. All upgrades are granted on a space-available basis, as determined at the time of check-in. Upgrades are subject to availability and identified by each hotel. Not available at Marriott Vacation Club.

Last time I stay at a vacation club

VickiSoCal Sep 10, 2012 9:06 pm

We stayed in Lake Tahoe in August in a condo with a master bedroom and bathroom, second bathroom for the kids, 2 days beds and two seating areas both with pullout sofas (which we didn't use, but some might), and full kitchen. For 209 a night. We got the 500 point arrival bonus for plats, but no other perks. For us, having the whole condo seemed like perk enough, we were very happy!

Only ones they had for "rent" we're garden units. On arrival at least 20 ocean (per maid) open, bur "too bad"

I just checked in at the Kaanapali MVC today and no arrival plat gift offered.
My understanding is aminity gift not available at MVC.

BKKLEE Sep 11, 2012 2:59 am

not fully correct, as a plat, per MR T&Cs you'll still due to get 500-points................ and if not $100.........

No upgrade for us when we stayed there (we weren't expecting one either). The website did have rooms with views available for sale the day before we checked in so I'm guessing they weren't at capacity.

The person checking us in mentioned that they don't upgrade since they are a timeshare property.

They did offer free parking as one of the platinum amenities which was probably the most valuable platinum amenity I've received at any Marriott.

Overall we had an excellent stay. The hotel is very well located.

As has been mentioned, just because some rooms were open doesn't mean that Marriott has the ability to upgrade anyone to those rooms.

Those rooms are "owned" by someone else for that week. Therefore, whether that owner uses the room for the whole week, part of the week, or possibly not at all, is totally upto the owner and not Marriott. Marriott won't know if the owner might show up 4 days into the 7 day ownership week. So what would happpen to that owner then? They paid thousands for that room for that 7 nights and for them to show up 5 days into the week is their perogative. (It may not be the best use of their money, but its their money and their room.)

What would you think if after you were traveling for a few weeks, you came home and one of your neighbors "upgraded" a friend to your house for a few days? They didn't know you were planning on coming home then and thought you weren't going to use it? That is fairly close to what you expect Marriott to do with Timeshare rooms. And I suspect they might have legal issues if they started playing that game.

That's not exactly how it works, but pretty close. (MVC uses points, not fixed unit/week ownership) But you hit the nail on the head, the units are owned by the owners and the managing company doesn't have the legal right to offer free upgrades by virtue of their contractual obligations with the owners.
