Do you all recommend emailing the hotel and asking for an upgrade ahead of time?

Is it worthwhile telling the hotel it's our honeymoon?
You can try to email them. I find it's hit and miss.

I'm SPG Gold and am going to try for a status match to Marriott Plat soon.

I can't speak to this property specifically, but I have had good luck in situations like this with various other properties around the world, so it's worth a try. However looks like you're planning quite far in advance, so you're better off waiting until a week or so out, or your message will likely have long since been lost.

Any success on suite upgrades with a FWN as a Plat? How long before checkin are people e-mailing for confirmed suite upgrades?

VanMan Aug 3, 2010 9:45 pm

I had a three night stay last month; one night FWN and two nights C&P. Got an upgrade to a Fantastic Suite for all three nights.

We're due to check in to the W tomorrow for 2 nights on full points as we booked speciality rooms. (Fabulous rooms) We booked these to guarantee full harbour views.

I've had the advance emails for the two rooms, one saying it has been upgraded to a Cool Corner and one saying we can't upgrade you, but noticeably online the reservation is now visible and is showing as a basic Wonderful room.

I've just called the hotel to query these. I asked about the Cool Corner and was told it only has a partial harbour view, so I've asked for it to be returned to a Fabulous room if they can't upgrade to a suite. (Online is showing all suite options, but obviously it isn't check-in time, so not applicable) I also asked for the 2nd room to be returned to a Fabulous room as it has been downgraded. The member of staff got all huffy with me on the phone and told me I had booked that room. I offered to send him the email confirmation with the room type on it, at which point he put me on hold for 3 minutes, before returning and telling me he could do a spectacular room and that was it. I asked to speak to a supervisor as I said they were selling Fabulous rooms online and that was what I had booked, so I wanted it sorting. He then told me he would allocate us a Fabulous room again, but made out he was doing us a favour.

Not a great experience 18 hours before check-in and completely out of kilter with what everyone else has experienced at the W. I hope that tomorrow is a bit better, especially as we're finishing up a pretty awful stay at the Westin Osaka at the moment and wouldn't mind reminding of why I actually spend my own money at Starwood.

I found that, once physically at check-in, they really make a good attempt at giving Plats a suite.

I'm not too fond of the harbor view from the W, all you see are cranes & cargo ships. IMHO, Sheraton Tower has much better harbor view.

I had a good experience emailing the hotel requesting for an upgrade for a special occasion last year. They were very accommodating and responded promptly to my email. Good luck with your request. I am sure they will take care of you.

Indeed, it's way too challenging to just munch an apple. (I'm in one of my facetious moods, as you can tell...) :D

How's brunch buffet at the Kitchen? I only ate there once for breakfast (comped). Not sure if it's worth HK$590 for the Sunday brunch?

This is a fabulous property. I reserved 2 connecting award rooms (family of 4) last summer, and was assured several times that we'd get them. Alas, upon checking in, we were told they couldn't connect us, and we wouldn't even be on the same floor. So they arranged a suite, managed to fit 2 rollaways in, and even refunded 12,000 SPG points since we technically didn't take a second room. Very classy. I'm returning in about 96 hours, though rather than take the risk I booked a suite for 24,000 points (not much more than I'm used to paying at the W Union Square for a basic room). I'm generally not a huge fan of Ws (I consider the Beverly Hills SLS to be what a W should be, sort of a W for grown-ups, if you will), but this is one of my favourite global properties. The pool scene rivals that of the Copacabana Palace...only 76 stories higher!

Agreed. One of my favorite int'l properties, not limiting to just Ws or SPG properties. Location may not be the most ideal, but the property itself and the staff are top notch. Redefines customer service.

Following on from my pre-stay comments earlier in the thread, we did have problems at check-in as I feared, with the hotel making a song and dance about upgrading one of the rooms to a Fabulous room when that had been booked. They also upgraded our room to a cool corner room and told us no suites were available. I offered to pay cash or points for an upgrade and was offered a Marvellous suite. When I asked if this was a standard or a speciality suite, the room then became unavailable again as they knew where I was going with this one. That was the last negative experience though for the trip.

Rooms were very nice. The view from the corner room was excellent as you could see the main harbour, not just the part with the cranes etc. Good location and good staff that we came across for the rest of our stay. We enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend the hotel as others have before us.

i actually really liked the location....

Had an overnight layover a week ago and stayed here on C&P. For a layover, the location was extremely convenient. Took the airport express in. Very nice not to need a taxi ride from the station. Before arriving, emailed to ask about upgrades available for additional points or cash and was given a complimentary upgrade to the harborview fabulous room. The decor isn't really my taste. Nice but a bit too much. However, my wife and son loved everything about the hotel, from the uber hip decor to the music played in the lobby level lounge. Ate at the lounge as the regular restaurant was closing. I wasn't impressed by the food, but my wife and son were happy. They also loved everything else about the hotel and vowed to stay only at the W when in Hong Kong. I was a hero for booking there instead of the Sheraton.
