Unfortunately, Starwood will not allow you to reserve rooms using points unless you already have them in your account, even though you are expecting points.

Starwood allows holding an award reservation for one week if you don't have enough points in the account. If you call back before the week is out, they can extend it for one more week.

book what you can with points (say you have enough for 3 nights out of 5 desired) and then book a $ reservation for the other 2 nights. When you get points, call and switch it over. With SPG this generally works.

I did so the first time I paid over the phone, then after that they wouldn't let me anymore unless I used their Geico credit card. Did you have it on automatic payment or something?

I had this problem a few months ago, but I just paid with my SPG Amex this evening. Nice to see as I resorted to the autodraft option for a number of months.

unless someone has a new link, it now appears that the 15,000 points with a card is dead. 10,000 is alive

While the Amex website only has the standard 10K offer, the 10K points on signup and 15K points on spend of $15,000 in 6 months is still very much alive.

Details and link for SPG Amex offer

Note it's only currently available on the Personal SPG Amex.

Can you spend your way to Platinum? I'm tracking to 35+night for the year... so i won't hit platinum that way, but i'm also tracking to spend upwards of $100K on the card.... anyone know if there is a platinum threshold?

i searched but didn't see a comment on this.

Thanks

No, $30K gets Gold but there is no level awarding Plat. Unlike the Marriott card, the award at the Gold level is purely Gold status and not X nights towards status.

Since this thread is over three years and my question is the current practice of AMEX: do you , or know others who have two Starwood Amex personal, or two business cards. In other words: if you have an existing personal card, can you apply and get a second personal card and get the sign up 10,000 promo points?

I thought it was 30k.
At least for me it was.

You usually get them posted a few days after statement closes. Mine seems to be 2 days after statement closes although it'll differ when it closes over weekend which will push it out.

Nice to know you can count on when you'll recieve them each month. I only wish I be able to spend $15,000 within the sic months. I just don't make that many pruchases. If only I could pay my mortgage with it.....sigh.

Do you know if the "10K for 1st purchase + 15K for $15K purchases in 6 months" deal is still available?
