You should always call back and connect to the cancellations department instead of talking to the CSR that you talked with when trying to get your fee waived. The CSRs can sometime cancel and be rude about it but the cancellation department has (I would think) a mandate to try and keep you as a customer.

How long does it take for bonus points to post after 5k spend? Is it mid-cycle or at the end of the next statement period?

Mid-cycle. Unlike other card issuers (Citi, Chase), Amex posts signup bonuses within a few days after the spend threshold is met, regardless of the billing cycle.

Can anyone see a really good reason not to close this, and thus make myself eligible for the bonus again sooner? FWIW, I've also got an SPG personal card that gives me all the card-related benefits that the business one does.

Not quite all of them. The business card gives you OPEN discounts with merchants such as HP. In addition, having the business card gives you an additional 2 stays/5 nights toward elite status. YMMV as to whether these benefits make it worthwhile to keep the card.

I signed up for this card without first creating an SPG account. When I signed up I was told that one would be created for me, but how do I get that account information?

Sign on to your online Amex account and look at a recent statement. Your SPG account number will be shown on the statement on the page showing SPG Starpoints Earned.

Thanks! It says "SPG Number is Not Available". I applied for the card recently, so hopefully it will be updated with a number eventually.

If you use the card for a C&P stay, do you get 2x on the cash portion?

You get 2X on anything charged to your folio at a Starwood property and settled with your SPG Amex.

How many days should I start to worry if I already spent $5,000 but the 20k bonus have not posted?

My spending reached $5k on Tuesday and as of today (Friday), the 20k points have not posted yet. I believe the 10k points (after first purchase) posted in two days.

Hi godsquare,

You may like to give it a bit more time.

The 20,000 bonus points will appear on your Starwood Preferred Guest statement 8-12 weeks after you reach the spend threshold.

To be clear, using your SPG Amex card will get you 2x on the cash portion (including taxes) from Amex.

However, the hotel itself will not award you any points for the cash portion of a C&P stay.

Thanks,

Fortunately, my 20k points posted to my AMEX account on Saturday and then to my spg account on Monday.

Please accept my apologies if this has been answered elsewhere...I have searched in vain here and via Google search. Any advice or data points would be much appreciated!

DH cancelled his SPG personal card (held for almost four years) in June of 2013 with plans to reapply a year later for the bonus. We'd tried in vain a couple of times to convince Amex to grant a retention bonus for our high spends and loyalty. Our reasoning was that they were giving out bonuses right and left - why not reward your most valued existing cardholders? Now we wish we hadn't cancelled as the 12 month rule for a new bonus seems to be out the window and we really do love this card. Thank goodness I didn't cancel mine!

Since we cancelled before they implemented the "no bonus to previous card holders" rule, could we possibly be off the previous cardholder list for bonus purposes? Are there any data points on this?
