Bangkok - Trying to decide which SPG Hotel

Normally I'm a W type of guy - if there's one in town, I'm probably staying there. But in Bangkok there seems to be a lot of sentiment that other options might be superior.

I found a thread from earlier this year where most people said that SGS was the way to go - but no one really gave ANY reasoning at all. Just a simple "SGS".

Both for me, and for anyone else in the future, it'd be nice to get some more detailed thoughts on these hotels to make a more informed choice. We all have different criteria/preferences.

Me: SPG Platinum, going to be in Bangkok for 3 nights with the wife. Agenda is relax, hit a spa, eat some good food, check out the nightlife.

The W, The St Regis, and the Sheraton Grand Sukhumvit are all similarly priced, from $147-$169/night, and all rated very well. As already mentioned, the W is usually my go-to because I know it'll be great and I like the vibe.

Le Meridien is also rated very well and reasonably cheaper.

Much appreciate your feedback.

I did see that thread, but the problem is that 2009 is 6 years ago...so I'm disinclined to weight the information there very heavily. I know more than one of those hotels has undergone a renovation since then, it's very common for management to completely change over, etc.

I'll maybe start at the end and read backwards, but frankly when I do research I generally ignore threads that are super old and 100 pages long. Very difficult to find what you need.

My wife and I will be in Bangkok for 3 days in November. Based on comments in this thread I'm thinking NOT the W, even though that's my goto. I'm SPG Platinum and I do have SNAs to burn.

1) SGS or PA? The three days we're going to be there are the only 3 days in the next 5 months that the SGS is sold out of the lowest room type, so it's marginally more expensive than the PA. Hard to tell exactly with everyone's comments about renovations, etc and not know if that's still going on or not.

2) Should I use an SNA? There have been times in the past that I wondered if I actually ended up in a worse room by selecting something specific via SNA vs letting the hotel put me in whatever they'd upgrade me to.

It'd be really nice if I could see before booking what options would be available via SNA.

Many flyertalkers stand by SGS. Personally I admit that I like the location and breakfast. I'm more indifferent on the rooms and services as I had a few issues with them.

I actually like the W and they often are available for BRG. I have a Jan rate for around 3300++, last year used some SNAs there and receive an excellent Marvellous suit and hope for the same this year. All the city hotels are reasonably located with BTS access especially making it easier to get around. As for SGS and PA I don't think you would be disappointed with either.

I agree - avoid the W. They don't treat Plats well and it's just in a poor locale imo. As for the others... you may also want to look at the St Regis. But yes, use SNAs at all of them... why not? SGS & PA are under construction so might as well take a shot. All 3 are nice but different (same same but different in Thai) and you'll have a nice experience at any. Personally I'm a SGS fan, but I also stay at the PA and St R from time to time to change it up. All good hotels.

I'm an SGS man, myself. I'm there (well, here, actually) now as I write this. I think that you'll find that SPG people are pretty loyal to their preferred hotels in this city.

Do you happen to know which room types are possible via SNA at those 3? Availability being a wildcard, of course. For instance, at the St. Regis is it only the Metropolitan Suite that'll be an option? Since they all seem pretty good, I'd probably make the call based on the better upgrade choices.

I usually stay at the St Regis, always get a suite, like the wine tasting in the evening and great breakfast buffet - also for me the location is great.

I stayed at the SGS 5 years ago and whilst it was a great stay I much prefer the St Regis location.

In saying that we are trying the W for our trip in a couple of weeks.

If the room is the destination, I can't imagine not staying at the St. Regis. I've now stayed at all of the BKK properties (although only once at W and St. Regis), and you honestly couldn't go wrong with any, but St. Regis is amazing.

Why not make a flex booking and test yourself? Unless you need space, I would skip using SNAs at StR as, even the Grande Deluxe Rooms, are absolutely delightful. Should you need a lot of extra space, the Met Suite might be better suited for you.
