I would look for a hotel that moved up in category in an area where there are no NC4 or lower hotels. TPG has an article with a link to a list of properties that had category changes 3/5/19.
Book Now: Marriott Category Changes to Take Effect March 5

Lisbon Marriott Hotel seems a likely candidate. It moved from NC4 (OC5) to NC5 and there are no other properties in Lisbon less than a category NC5 which means your cert is no good for new bookings there post 3/5/19. I know you planned on using your cert there and now because they changed categories without giving you notice you cannot use your cert there as you planned when you purchased it. It is their fault and they need to make it right. Of course, you are willing to pay any extra points to convert your cert to something you can use, but they need to help you since they caused the problem, right?

Was speaking to a operator who agreed to convert my old cat 1-5 to a new cat 5. He says I will get 45k back and the new cat 5 is 135k so I would need 90k more and not the 60,000 that everyone has mentioned on this thread. Is this correct?

New cat5 should be 105k, not 135k. Please update us your success story.

There is an order code for an NC5 at both 105k and 135k. You need to make sure the agent orders the 105k cert. Code linked in the wiki.

Just had a really easy phone call - less than 10 minutes. Cancelled an existing reservation with a 530T attached, converted to QP61, cost me +35K points. Considered QP69 but it's +105K points! I'm more than happy with QP61. Now shows up as a " Partial Package - 5 nights category 5" now in my account, with a +1 year expiry from today.

[edit] wait what? the agent said 35K on the phone, I got an email that it cost me 45K, and my account says I was debited 45K and credited 10K. What's the right number here?

I bought an OC7 package for 330,000 miles pre merger and attached it to a hotel. In January 2019 I cancelled the hotel and Marriott attached a NC7 certificate to my account. It's going to expire in August and I don't think I can use it.
Ask to extend or cancel and see what I can get back?

Are you sure they gave you a NC7 for an OC7?
The points difference between OC7 and NC7 is huge.

Yes, It says 7 Night Travel Package Category 7 Hotels
When I was talking to an agent, I asked if I could downgrade to a category 6 hotel, she said no. Need to do something with it, since it expires 8/17

Wow, first of all congrats on the winning conversion.
I believe once you have a NC, no more changes whatsoever can be made on it, so you just need to find a way to use it.
Good luck!

Welcome! It's great when someone reads the Wiki before asking questions. It is also nice when people express appreciation for the effort that some posters have put into helping others. Finally, I am glad that you took the time to add your experience to the travel package knowledge base.

I just successfully converted a OC8 to a NC6. Thanks to this thread, it was quick and painless. I've been lurking for a few months now, and wanted to both contribute the DP and also thank Happy, margarita girl, jameswes and everyone else who collectively spent countless hours contributing to this thread.

DP details:
- I called the number in the Wiki on a weekday (~3pm in London) hoping I'd get someone a bit more experienced.
- Call 1 was a HUCA.
- Call 2 was successful. I stated that I'd like to convert to a NC6, and that I knew it'd cost me an additional 30k points. The agent looked up my OC8 and let me know that he saw the NC5 available and that I'd get 30k points refunded. I mentioned that I didn't really want a NC5 because the hotel I was hoping to use the certificate at was NC6. I asked if there was any possibility of converting to a NC6. He looked again and mentioned that he did see the NC6 at a cost of 165k points (which made me feel confident that we were on the right path, as I'd recalled the various 105k/135k/165k partial values). After a brief hold, he returned and then confirmed that I had the necessary 30k points in my balance. The call lasted 12 minutes total.
- My Marriott app was immediately up to date showing the new 'Partial Package - 7 nights category 6' with an expiration date of 1 year from today, and my points balance is now 30k points lighter.
- Within 15 minutes, I received both the cancelled award and new award email confirmations.

Thanks again - there is little chance that I would've been able to accomplish this without the information in this thread.

I did the exact same thing couple days ago and it worked also!!

For my first phone call, I dialed the generic Marriott help line for North America 1(800).... and was rejected/decline for the upgrade. The guy on the phone was nice, but said there is nothing he can do to help me upgrade to a NC6.

I waited 10 mins, called the UK number posted in this thread, the lady on the phone was able to help me convert my OC8 to NC6, with the cost of 30k more points. Within 15-20 mins after the phone call I received 2 e-mails back to back. One for cancelling the OC8 and refunded 135k points to my account, the other one for purchasing the NC6 for 165k points. I checked on my Marriott app and it now shows I have a partial 7-night category 6 certificate with an expiry date one year from today (4/30/2020).

I didn't think I would have any chance to upgrade my certificate to a higher category, but you won't know unless you try and keep calling. Be persistent!

Thanks!!

That is an OC7 full cert. You will not be able to use it without converting to NC cert.

For reference, OC7 partial cert would be 7 Night Partial Package Category 7 Hotels.

NC5 partial cert, which is what this OC7 should convert to, would be Partial Package - 7 Nights Category 5 (note the word Hotels is omitted in the NC certs).

I had a OC9->NC6 travel package certificate. I had Marriott detach it from an existing reservation I am no longer going to use. My hope was to convert/upgrade this to a NC7. The price difference per night is 10K (50K vs 60K) so I made sure I had 60K points in my account. Upon trying this the agent came back saying that I needed an incremental 150K points to convert to NC7. I can see this is the delta in the surrender values in the wiki now(315K vs 165K). Is 150K accurate or am I missing something or is the agent missing something. Thanks in advance for any light anyone can shine on this. 150K is a steep price to convert/upgrade and likely not worth it for me.

Yeah unfortunately I think the agent might be right.

If you refer to the chart, OC9 has a refund value of 165K, which means the agent would cancel your OC9 and refund you 165k points to your account, than request/purchase a NC7 for 315k points. Therefore, you would need to pay the difference which is 150k points (315k - 165k)
