Save your points

I'm here now. The hotel is packed with cash paying customers. As a Marriott Gold your points only get you the worst, noisiest, rooms on the property. Forget any upgrades. Wait for a recession.

I'm a little late to this party ... But we have a 7 night stay planned for August and I'm going to place an order with Amazon to ship a box of staples like cereal, plastic ware, paper bowls and cups, and most importantly a cheap electric kettle and plunge pot which I'll leave behind when I check out. Then pick up milk, ground coffee, and fresh fruit on our way to the property. I don't know that this will save us a ton of money, but I like my fresh brewed tea in the mornings (and coffee for my wife, who does not like nespresso) and much prefer being able to hang out on our own balcony enjoying a leisurely cuppa and breakfast. I'm sure we'll go out for a few breakfasts too.

We did something similar at the Hilton resort on the big island some years ago, except we dragged all that stuff in our luggage. This time, I plan on traveling light with just a roll aboard, hence the Amazon shipment.

EDIT: I haven't called the hotel yet to make sure they don't have a fee for deliveries. I'm only thinking about this now because I had a small package delivered to a Vegas hotel last week; at that property, they had a fedex office that processed all packages and charged a weight based fee for package delivery.

Well that's discouraging news! What category room did you reserve? I have a stay in early August and I've reserved a partial ocean view room.

Not that it matters at this point but a certain hospital group out of Rochester, MN had a general surgery course there last week. I've gone several times and the rates are about 1/2 what you would find online so I'm sure it was booked solid and most of the folks book ocean view, etc...I've got to the point where if I'm going to HI during hi season I do a google search for medical conferences at the resort I want to stay at to see what weeks to avoid.

Do not accept room 229 in the tower. Noise from constant baggage carts is crazy. Booked garden view with points.

Thanks for the tip - we booked garden view with points for our trip in a few weeks. I've heard bad things about the garden view rooms (views of parking lots - now excessive noise).

Why the baggage cart noise - is this room close to the lobby / baggage cart storage?

I did get a welcome email from a Guest Service Coordinator - where it was noted, " I will be the curator of your Hawaiian experience, assisting you prior to your arrival and throughout the duration of your journey with us. "

Anyone had that email before? Are they of any help?

I am headed there in 2 weeks and received the welcome letter asking me for flight details, etc. I asked to not be upgraded to the parking lot view and to just leave me in the garden view room that I booked. My room seems to get worse every time I stay there.

Haha - I am not as fussed with the view as I am with the noise, so I just asked for something VERY quiet!!!! Since I'll be there a week after you, report back here to let us know what you ended up getting. And any more tips on the other garden view rooms to avoid!

We check in really late in the evening, so I am doubting we'll have any control over the room we get when we check in. And I just HATE switching rooms, so I hope we get lucky...

Can anyone provide more information on how many buildings are in that hotel, and what building is best (and best to avoid)? Are the garden view rooms just in the one tower?

I think I have been there three times. Two times I was in the building to the left of checkin and there was no noise. The parking lot view was the building to the right of check in. The parking lot in question is where service trucks come in and out.

Depending on how they define "garden view", I think there are garden view rooms in all the buildings.

The hotel has one tower and 7 smaller buildings or hales (after the Hawaiian "hale" for house or building). Hale 1 is west of the tower, and hales 2-7 are closer to the water and extend south off of the main lobby. The exact room will matter more than the hale for noise. I'd personally avoid the tower unless you have an ocean view of some sort, as any room in that tower not facing the water will likely have a view of the parking or maintenance areas of the hotel. I think some rooms might face the lobby area, though I don't know how the noise is in those rooms.

For noise, I'd also avoid any room that faces the pools, as those can be loud or not, though some will have nice views. The adult pool is generally quiet but there are more people who also walk through that area as it's the easiest way to get to the lobby from many parts of the hotel. I think most of the rooms that face that pool are ocean view, though, but a small subset may be considered garden.

Thanks - this is really helpful. I am not as fussed with pool noise, just as long as it's not above or below a restaurant or party area (as some reviews have reported). It's the maintenance parking lot/dumpster view that would be the big let down.

I am finding it interesting that most of the complaints I've seen about room assignment are from those that booked the Garden Room - which are supposed to be a step-up from the regular run of the house. Garden rooms seem to be either a view of a dumpster, or ground floor rooms with low ceilings (we have 2 in our family that are over 6 feet tall, so that won't do!), a walkway in front of your room and a constant stream of bugs.

I'll make sure if they tell me they are 'upgrading me', that I do not have a view of the lobby, any parking lot or nearby any maintenance areas (either inside or outside!). I know they'll be busy, and since we're arriving late, there won't be much choice! I'll just try to stay away from those first floor rooms especially, since there doesn't seem to be anything nice to say about them!

So true!

When I was in medical sales a while back, the specialists that I called on held their annual conferences at the Hilton Hawaiian Village.
The organizers were kind enough to block out as many of the Ocean/Diamond Head view rooms for their participants, and even vendors like myself had
sweet, high floor rooms facing that direction. I don't remember what tower I was in at time but I was on the 33rd (?) floor with a
commanding view of Diamond Head and Waikiki.

Stone floors. Tower garden rooms face the Valet / Lobby car circle. Every car that enters the circle passes over a metal grate that sounds like a very loud cattle crossing grate. My best advice is to NOT ACCEPT any room in the Tower.

I recently used a 7n redemption at this property with certificate upgrades to a Premium Ocean View room (which essentially doubled the redeemed points). Although the view from Hale 7 was amazing, the lawn between the balcony and the ocean was filled every other night with a reception for whichever conferences were at the property. The opposite nights, we could hear the Te Au Moana luau and families roaming to and from inside the room. This was a pretty different setup than the solitude of a high-floor concierge level experience.

I was pretty upset about the daily resort fee until I used the pools and beachside chairs. Having fresh towels by the pool along with someone setting up chairs/umbrella at the beach was certainly nice. The mai tai coupons from check in, for use at the restaurant, have a $30 value on their own!

All in all, I felt most frustrated about upgrading when there was nothing special about using all the extra points. Although the Customer Service and overall experience at this property was adequate, my wife and I will likely move up the road to the RI next time. We don’t spend too much time in the room on Maui, so saving $230 in resort fees may be worth it.

I always stay in an oceanfront suite in Hale 7, so I do have to agree that if you didn't appreciate the ocean view and were bothered by the noise, then this was a waste of points. Hearing the luau right next door a few nights a week only adds to the "I'm in Hawaii" vibe to me. I've not stayed at the RI, but just go there knowing you won't get the resort feel or treatment like you seemed to enjoy at the pool at the Wailea Marriott.
