Edition Riviera Maya
This one has been “coming soon” for over a decade but recent reports from friends staying at the Auberge in the same development say it’s really close. And the website now promises 2023. Any updates from those in the know? Would love to be able to use some points there in 2023.

JW Marriott debuts in Auckland next year
Marriott International is set to introduce the JW Marriott brand to New Zealand at the site of the iconic Stamford Plaza Auckland, which sold for a record NZ$170 million last month. Following a recent signing with Albert Street Operations Ltd, the property will be fully converted to a JW Marriott by mid-2024. It will also undergo a NZ$20 million refurbishment in phases and is expected to reopen on December 16, 2022. Marriott International Vice President of Hotel Development for Australia, New Zealand, and Pacific, Richard Crawford, said the signing of JW Marriott Hotel Auckland is another positive step forward. “There are now more than 100 hotels in 35 countries and territories that carry our founder’s name, JW Marriott,” Crawford said. “This latest signing is another example of Marriott’s dominant expansion in the region and a testament to our confidence in the recovery of travel, particularly the luxury market which we believe is set to thrive in Australia, New Zealand and Pacific region.” The property, which is co-owned by CP Group, Alvarium Investments and Archipelago Capital, will feature 286 rooms of luxury accommodation, an executive lounge and lobby bar, 100-seat buffet restaurant, as well as a smaller speciality dining venue. The brand’s signature JW Garden will allow guests to grow herbs and ingredients as part of the culinary journey. |

Le Méridien is returning to South America after losing Le Méridien Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro in 2009: Crowne Plaza Santiago will not be renewing its contract with IHG, and come January 1st, 2023, the property will join Marriott as Le Méridien Santiago. Source article here and here.
I expect a renovation will follow to bring the hotel in line with Le Méridien's standards and design aesthetic, but I'm thrilled to see the brand expand into a new country and back into South America. khabah |

It appears the Tryp by Windham in Bogota will become Fairfield by Marriott Bogota Embajada in March 2023. I've never stayed at the TRYP but it is well reviewed and looks nice.

Saudi Arabia's NEOM project is trudging along, and the recent announcement about one of the first project components was recently announced: Sindalah Island, which will house three luxury properties and famously made regional headlines for its leaked plans of containing a champagne bar, cocktail bar, wine bar and wine retail store... but that's a different story. The project was announced but no details were released regarding hotel operators - until I found these listings on Marriott's Careers website.
Based off this, two of the three hotels will open under The Luxury Collection and Autograph Collection brands. Although I don't generally have issues with LC or AC, I find these two brands very ho-hum for what has been marketed as an ultra-luxury destinations and would have much preferred to see a brand like Cheval Blanc, Bulgari, Four Seasons or Regent - especially when I see the AC property lined up. Hmm. khabah https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...e93fcaf412.png |
