May I ask, as a new MSer in NYC what are some decent locations to load? I live in LIC so I may try the Rite Aid in Astoria (although I read somewhere that Rite Aids charge a load fee). Do fellow NYers have some locations they could point me towards?
One person's experience may differ from another's. Go SLOW! Make cashier friends! As a part time NYC resident, I can say there are possibilities for MS. |

Is the Rite Aid fee true though?
Depends on the store.... If there's a Serve Free Load option then it's free. |
my go to RA in the bay area just declined a vanilla GC .. have been using them since aug last year and never had any issues with any GC
I tried to load Serve and they got a prompt. not sure if vanillas are starting to get hard coded to be declined. Buxx worked fine will try again tomorrow with another reloadable. |

I was able to load a vanilla GC yesterday at RA in NYC.

Not sure why some people within the same general area (ie, Los Angeles area) are having such different experiences. In any case, I loaded my Serve at 2 different RA last night. At 1 store, no problems. At another store, the cashier said she needed to ask the manager because there was a hand-written sign saying "unable to load AMEX prepaid". I asked about that, and she said they were "having problems" with that. The manager said OK and it was another successful load. This was my go-to RA so I was really worried when I saw that sign.

Just loaded twice at diff RAs today in GA. I did notice that after transaction cc machine screen shows the balance remaining on the card. It says something like prepaid balance $0.00

I just loaded Serve at RA and didn't see that. I'll pay closer attention next time.

I tried to unload a $400 Target VGC at RiteAid on my Serve card yesterday.
After entering the PIN (since these cards have the PIN setup at first use) and declining cashback, the payment terminal froze on "Waiting for Payment..." The manager had to come to fix it. To keep a low profile, I did a second try loading $400 of a Visa Buxx card and this one worked flawless, on the same register. Then, I tried my Target card in another store for a Debit purchase (same PIN as before) and this worked too. Any idea what happened here? Is it possible that the Target VGC don't work with RiteAid when a PIN is not set? I'll still have money on that card and will attempt another load in the next day or so to see if it will work this time. Went back to RiteAid with that card and could load $350 after the PIN code was set by the "another store" debit purchase above. So there might be something in how the RiteAid payment terminal handles debit cards with no PIN set. Did any of you have a similar experience? |
