Do you still have the packaging? Your card likely came with a PIN assigned and shown on a little card inside the packaging. If you don't use that PIN the first use of the card, it often loses it's debit capability even if you try to reassign a PIN by calling in, or first use, or online.

Just keep calling everyday and tell them you need to unload your gc to insure your sign up bonus.

Thanks for the information. No I don't have the packaging, I just ripped it open like all the others that I have used. Maybe I will buy one more and check for a PIN inside. Thanks again.

I am glad that you have an extra $500 and you can leave it on a card. You don't know me!

You're right, they don't know you. But it's true - you should never call. That's what this forum is for...tons of information of ACTUAL experience. Not some college kid client service rep who doesn't realize their gift cards CAN be used as debit. There are other threads that go into detail about these GC and what their anomalies are. With some searching and reading you will figure it out. Good luck!

I purchased US banks VGCs or MCGCs from Kroger for about 2 years. I never have any problem with BB or MOs.

I am fairly sure the PIN won't be the same

It won't be the same PIN, but he will know that that there was a PIN included in the packages that were put in the trash.

I have a similar issue. Two of the four cards I bought a few days ago -- US Bank Visa from Kroger -- won't load to BB with a PIN. I tried on two separate days at both Kate and a cashier hoping it was a temporary issue at one of the terminals. As always, as soon as I bought the cards (i.e., before attempting a swipe), I called and re-set the PIN to a number combination that I can easily remember.

Are they a lost cause or can they be resurrected or replaced by calling customer service. And, NO, I don't intend to tell them it's a BB loading issue. I would tell them PIN based transactions won't go through.

That's what I want to know also. Do I use it as a credit card or debit card with the new pin when I buy regular goods with this card?

I'm pretty sure you can buy regular goods with it by running it as credit. I am hoping that there is some way I can resurrect its ability to do a PIN based transaction so I can load the faulty card to BB after all. Otherwise, the card fees were wasted.

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

I also every now and then I get a card that won't load to serve. Sometimes it will load successfully a week or two later. But I've accumulated a couple cards that still won't load and that I will have to use as credit. Fortunately they were only $100 denomination. Anyone know why this happens?

Card fees likely wasted. I've never had one resurrect. Chock it up to the cost of doing business. Sometime you lose in this game. I'll take the $4.95 hit every once in a while for all that I'm gaining from the rest of it.

These GC PIN questions should go in a different thread (there are threads loaded with all this information). It is not a problem specific to Kroger. It could happen to any card bought anywhere.

I purchased a $500 US Bank issued VGC from Fred Meyer (Kroger friendly family) and it will not run as debit.

BB loads fail and to test if it was a BB hardcode issue or not I tried to run it at a local debit-only grocery store and it failed.

I used the preset PIN from the inside flap and it was the first use.

I am wondering if anyone has tried the "change payment method" workaround similar to the MasterCard GC issue where they try to run as credit.

I am going to try the "change payment method" workaround and I'll report back.
