Today I was warned by a familiar cashier at Smith's. He checked my credit card (AA) and refused to sell GCs to me. He mentioned that these GCs are only sold for business uses now... WT...?

Frisco. Yes on the DL...I always have it out ready to hand to them anyway. I swipe my CC and hand them my CC and DL right after I swipe CC.

My local Kroger cashier says you have to use service desk >$100 VGC. Enteredmy DL and wouldn't you know it, Chase Freedom put a hold on transaction. Was in a hurry for start of SuperBowl and didn't have my phone to call so just walked away. Cleared it up online later and will try a different store today using express check out line.

Mis-informed cashier most likely. Try again with another cashier and see what happens.

Kroger Master Thread

Ha. I just tried to buy 3x500 at my usual store in PHX and got told cash only. Asst mgr even came over and told me no dice because of the new policy.

Did you ask the asst mgr if he knows what (3x500)+(3x5.95) equals?

Didn't even bother since he said it was cash only on any amount. The funny part to me was that the cashier asked the guy at the service desk first and he said I can pay with a cc, but she didn't believe him and called for a manager... thats when the asst mgr came over and said no. And my ears may have been hearing things (long day at work) but I swear he said something to the cashier about a "pyramid scheme" as I was walking away. I'll try a different store tomorrow and see if I have better luck. Then I'll try the first store again next week after the dust settles and they have time to figure out what the heck they are doing.

Has anyone tried using a passport card or other form of ID? I carry mine and occasionally pull it out instead of my DL if I am not paying attention. Even managed to use it getting a speeding ticket one time - didn't realize until it was handed back to me with my ticket.

If it becomes hard coded to DL, it could be a way for some of you major MSers to double your monthly allotment. I'll try to remember to try it next time I buy GCs at Kroger.

UPDATE: Bought 3x500 at my regular store yesterday. Paid w/CC. I did see the cashier I mentioned below, who was in the same lane very close to the CS desk, and decided to steer clear. Went to another cashier, younger, more confident, further away from CS. No questions, scanned my license as usual. He also repeated the total purchase to me in a normal voice, as fifteen something something. Love that Not ONE THOUSAND FIVE HUNDRED.... in a loud voice, which some cashiers do. Good grief. Hope he's working again today.

Cashier profiling? You bet.

Before I could offer to help, he took the cards, walked a few steps to the CS counter and asked the two store staff there how to do it. I presume both were managers of some sort - just on the basis of demeanor and apparent seniority but have no hard facts to back that up. One asked how much I was loading, he said three cards, one mgr said no problem. The other said, with something of an attitude, 'he can't use a credit card for those'. The cashier came back, said sorry, no can do with your cc, only cash. Said they'd had lots of fraud. So, I wasn't going to push it, said I don't carry that kind of cash. and just paid for the couple of grocery items. Left and went to another nearby Kroger, bought 1,5k, paid for wtih CC and had no problem.

So, I think the rumors have a good chance of becoming fact sooner rather than later. Will it be Feb 1? No reason not to believe what the other poster said, but I'll be sure to try again Feb 2, next time I'm there. Fingers crossed that there may be a very limited window in early Feb before all stores and cashiers are up to speed, but I'm not holding my breath.

Will be very sad to see this avenue go if it does. It's been very good for a few years.
