FYI, the office in Bel Air, MD is cash only as of the last time they ran this promotion.

Does one have to be a AAA member to purchase these in NO VA, or MD?

minamhere May 15, 2015 6:26 pm

My understanding is you only have to be a member to get them with no activation fee.

$1k per household sounds standard in NoVA. At least that was the limit last Nov/Dec.

I've tried Lansdowne and Fairfax after buying in Tysons, they could see in the system that I had already purchased the limit.

I've just picked up a couple of cards in the latest Mid-Atlantic gift card promotion.

Last week a AAA employee mentioned an email informing them that people buying multiple max-denomination gift cards were doing it for points, and there were some sort of quantity limits put in place, although I didn't get specifics.

AAA needs to grow some balls and tell their supplier to go pound sand. AAA is pretty much the only retailer that takes daily "commands" from their supplier.

Agreed though at least that is an improvement over them accusing us of fraud.

Warning: Noob Question

How do you people find out about these promos? Also, anybody try this in the East Central region?

I'm a member so they send me emails of different discounts.

I'm a member too, but the only place I heard about it is from here!

Are you a AAA Mid-Atlantic member? Just being an AAA member isn't enough. I'm a member of AAA Tidewater, the territory adjacent to the Mid-Atlantic chapter, and I got no notice of this particular promotion. Since the promotion is not being offered by my AAA chapter, I'm not surprised by that.

NY member. Bought some last December at the Scarsdale office.

Teo1Jay May 21, 2015 2:37 am

I purchased 2 $500 cards in December 2014 in Suburban Maryland...no problem.

For this new promotion I tried to buy 2 $500 cards at a different office about 10 miles away in Maryland.

The super nice AAA lady told me sadly that the "system" put a note on my account that I've reached my limit.

For the year?

Forever?

She didn't know but I'll try again if they have another December promotion.

Any other organizations offering no-fee GCs to their members?

That means you are a blacklisted. That is exactly what happened to me. In my case the very nice AAA lady said she got a call from Metabank saying my activities were fraudulent. She said she told them she didn't believe it because I had been going there for years (not for gift cards). As for the duration of the blacklist who knows. There is a note in my AAA record basically not to sell me prepaid products or similar. Sounds like you have the same thing.

Instead of giving checks for weddings, bar mitzvahs etc. I actually gave these gift cards that I bought last December. It's interesting that they have these promotions around gift giving times Christmas and graduation, weddings but make it difficult to take advantage of. I can understand a limit but $1000 lis ridiculous.
