EDIT: Even if this were true for every area, you could still go in store (assuming that the load codes as a purchase).

This post by Marathon Man seems to indicate that Citi codes these reloads as cash advance. So if you're going to try this, don't use a Citi card...

(Maybe this AAA TravelMoney card discussion deserves its own thread?)

They may have changed the Visa Travel, but my recollection was:

1. Online CC load fees are 2-3%, but you can load with a CC online. In theory you can also do this over-the-phone with Metabank.
2. In stores would not let you load with a CC, even though the website indicated this was possible.

All of the details were buried in the T&C's. I can't seem to access these anymore without a card, at least for AAA Midlantic.

If anyone can get more details, please post. I may be wrong.

Went into my local AAA to buy VGC today. I have bought them here a few times before, never more than $1K in a transaction and always when I am in AAA for other reasons. Anyway, staff told me that they no longer sell variable VGC. They said that Metabank had problems with fraud which is why they weren't selling them any more. I'm in Florida, so maybe it's just here.

What part of FL are u in?

I am in South FL.

I've bought VGC card at AAA locations as recently as last week.

Interestingly, each AAA office sets its own GC fees. And, they do, in fact, vary from office to office

I'm in Central FL. The women in the AAA office seemed very confused about the whole thing and gave me the impression that this is a very recent change. One mentioned reading a memo about the change. They told me I could buy the giftcards online. I looked into that and the activation fee is $6.95 online. The activation in the AAA office was $2.95. The last time I bought AAA cards was April 9th, so the new policy has occurred in my location since then.

In the Tampa area I have located a AAA that is selling variable load Metabank Visa gift cards for $3.00. Can anyone confirm if they are pin enabled?

dajoip May 10, 2014 10:12 am

Can anyone confirm that these haven't recently been posting as CA for Citi cards?

Setting PINS
Visa issued by MetaBank - Use the last four digits of the card number (or to set personal PIN call 888-524-1283)

A recent Federal Reserve interpretation of Dodd-Frank financial reform regulations has resulted in Visa/MC gift cards getting PINs as of April 1, 2013.
From the wiki.

They are participating in the promo, through 6/30/14.
Cards are Visa GCs issued by Metabank.
Tried to buy 6 cards, but cashier said limit was 4. Seemed like limit was per visit/day.
Tried to purchase w/ AX CC, but cashier said Visa or MC only.

So: successfully purchased 4X $500 in one visit.

I can confirm all of the above, especially that 4 is the limit at the Tyson's branch.

I'm hoping this is 4 per day, not per promotion.

I'm going back on Wednesday to buy another 4; I'll report back then.

Possible MS?: AAA - no processing fee giftcards - Nov / Dec

Anyone try a citi card for this?

I did use my Citi reserve back in Nov/Dec and didn't get hit with any fees.

How about updating thread title? Nov/Dec are long past. Another example of why long-dated, broad scope threads with a lot of obsolete information are a bad idea.

How about you report the thread, put the reason and have a moderator do so instead of pointing it out in thread?

The limit is 4 cards for the promotion.

Went to the Fairfax, VA AAA today and handed the cashier my card. She said "you already bought 4 in Tyson's, you can't buy anymore."

You can call the 866# and set the pin. I cashed out via MOs at WM.

This must be location specific, because I have purchased more than $15k since the promotion began. The manager was the one who most recently sold me $3k and didn't mention anything.

Also, these do not count as CA on CITI as my wife and I both met our min spend on CITI cards.
