Went to the DC office today to get the cards. On the website, it says the cards can be loaded to $750/each but the rep told me it was $500. I told her about the website saying $750 and she said they would correct it.

Took about 5-10 minutes. They told me the limit was 4 cards so I got $2,000 worth. Don't know if that was per day, per AAA office, or per promotion (does anyone know?).

When I went to pay with a credit card she warned me that it would be processed as a cash advance and recommended I use a debit card or cash. That stopped me for a moment, but I asked her to process it as a credit card and when I checked my account on Chase, the available cash advance limit is unchanged so I feel confident this will post as a purchase.

Then I set the pin, went to Wally's and did a BillPay (which provided its own set of challenges but we got through it)!

What I learned today at my local AAA office

I went today for my second round of cards at AAA. As a newbie in AAA things, I learned a lot.
  1. I asked for 10 cards. No problem, they sold me 10 cards. I was expecting to have a barrier set by the 4 card limit, but no such problem, 10 cards went through smoothly in one transaction and no one said anything. When I got home 5 minutes later I called to set the PINs, and all 10 cards are active with $500 each. ^
  2. Evidently, my AAA office does not sell much of this product. When I bought my 4 initial cards 6 days ago the cards had sequential numbers. Today, my cards have sequential numbers too. And they are just one number apart from the previous cards. I can only assume that they sell them sequentially, and only sold one card to someone else in the past six days. Clearly no other FTer around here exercising the AAA deal. ^
  3. When I asked for 10 cards, before ringing me up the lady asked a colleague if they had enough. Colleague came over and pointed to her screen "see here, we have 250 cards". So wow, I can go back for more. @:-) I guess next time I'll ask for 240 cards in one transaction. Fiji in first class, here I come :D

What CC is best to buy these? does CSP get 2x for travel?

Also, how did you find that page on the AAA website showing that the visa gc's were available? I'm logged into my account and can't find that offer showing no fee on the cards (I'm east central aaa).

I don't think CSP codes these correctly for travel.

Recently checked visa merchant coding and I believe AAA is coded as Associations/Organization.

Anyone buy this with Amex? Is it a cash advance?

It does not. Last winter I also tried to see if it would code as travel for a Barclays reimbursement, and that didn't work either. 1x as far as I can tell.

so one needs to be a Triple A member to buy these at the retail locations? hmm wonder if this offer is going on here in TX and if this would be worth it (esp if theres no 4 card per promo limit here)

also the folks buying AGCs for no fees, my Q is why?? does your CC have some kinda promo for buying at AAA? you'd still have to buy VGCs with fees or how else are you liquidating AGCs... also you could just buy AGCs w/o fees in many cases online with CB.

Haven't yet joined AAA - had better options in Nov when they last had the promotion. There is a TV ad in TX right now for reduced annual membership. I couldn't find any promotions for VGC on AAA Texas website, but I think I'll call local office anyway. My options have shrunk significantly and I currently have 4 hefty min spends to make.

yeah for sure, call and see what local IAH area offices have this promo going on :) that'd be good to know.

Are these AAA VGC's best unloaded at WM via BB or MO's or other method?

There are so many posts about this. Just liquidate this any way that you normally would liquidate a VGC.

bar19900 May 22, 2014 5:31 am

To me, it seems that only aaa branches that offer banking services carry the vgc. Is this a valid trend?

Went to the same office last week and bought 4 cards. They mentioned the cash advance thing as well, so I used an AGC which I had to liquidate somehow anyway. When I came back this week they didn't let me buy more. They even remembered me ("Were you the gentleman that came in last week?...")

I asked why I couldn't buy more and they answered that they want to have some left for other members. But then they offered me that I can buy more with cash if I wanted to. Weird.

The day after I bought my initial 4 at this office, I went to a different office to buy some more. When asked how many I wanted, I asked if there was a limit and they rep said no. So I asked for 4 at $500 each ($2,000 total). He asked a colleague via a phone headset if the max per card was indeed $500. He was told yes, but then the woman he was on the phone with came over and leaned over his shoulder as he was completing the transaction.

She noticed in their system that I got four yesterday and you could tell she didn't like that I was getting four more. I asked if four was really a limit and they said they try and stick to four per promotion. She did sell them and it didn't seem like anything needed to be overridden but you might have to be a little forceful (but nice) if needing more than four.

I do not get some of these employees. Besides for us MSers, I doubt many people even know these cards exist.
