The limit is $2k, not $1k

Anyone else having a similar issue? Every time I go in to buy one over $300, the system prompts the cashier for my ID, but when they scan it, they get an error that the system is temporarily unavailable. Have to cancel the transaction out, but retrying does the same thing. Tried 2 stores so far, 2 different days, same result...

A cpl months ago I ran into an issue where it couldn't verify the ID. It was working fine the following day.

My error, but point remains: limit seems easy to defeat, even without resorting to alternate IDs.

I sometimes would get that error when they swipe my D/L (pre-change). There is also a 3D barcode on my license. If they scan that, it goes through 100% of the time. I think my mag strip is bad.

CVS swiping driver's license for PayPal load purchase

I have been using My PayPal cards at CVS for a while now but today was the first time the woman at the counter swiped by driver's license. I think this is the first time almost ever that someone has swiped my driver's license at POS. Is this a new practice? Why are they doing it and is there a way to avoid it -- should I be concerned in the first place?

before today, have you only been buying 1 card at a time?
anything >1k always needed ID scan. New policy is anything >300

Had the same 'error' processing message at one of my goto stores earlier today. Went back about 30 minutes ago and tried to buy $2k worth and it wouldn't go through. Manager came over and read off the screen (I couldn't see it) that there was now a message that said "cash or debit only". These were the standard One Vanilla Debit cards... She also told me that the system was updating when I was in earlier and assumed that it was a software update.

Will try another store tomorrow and see what happens.

Thanks! Yes, always one card -- today I bought two. What's the logic behind this and more importantly, what are the implications? Does it make sense to but $300 to avoid getting id scanned?

You're in the Matrix now.

How many cards were you buying in the past at a time? Before if you bought over $1K in cards in 1 transaction they had to swipe DL so that you don't work around the system exceeding the $5K limit.

Now I think the DL trigger is $300 or more so it totally makes sense that they will have to swipe your DL at the POS machine. I don't get why people are still surprised at these things. Bottom line...this is not new and they have been doing this for a long time now.

I've had my ID scanned at CVS dozens of times, and I'm still feeling fine. :p

If you want to worry about something, worry about the NSA tapping your cell phone, not about CVS scanning your drivers license. That info stays in their internal system, it doesn't go anywhere. It's just to make sure you don't exceed their running 24 hr limit.

Some stores here were always $1k and others always cash. $300 is the no ID threshold.

The system updates have been funky at CVS, but not as funky as W-D where the registers in two stores have been documented to charge your card but not approve the GC purchase.

Happened to me too at CVS for just 1 PayPal card. Weird.. I've got two Walgreens both within 5 miles. One sells me $1k/day PayPal the other only $500/day, they just check my DL to see if it matches names on CC. I'm more comfortable with showing my DL than swiping by CVS..
