Just bought 4k of beans in DFW no questions asked. Didn't mention memo or anything.

Bought some toilet paper and Andre champagne today at CVS with cc. Business as usual.

The point is the memo states that the reason is increased card swipe fees. If the VR at CVS was previously profitiable, breakeven, slight loss, whatever, with a CC before the increase, clearly its now considered enough of a loss with the increase that its not worth doing anymore (per memo statment), however, there is no way that paying with a VR with a CC BEFORE the increase was in anyway shape or form cheaper than a debit card transaction, and i highly doubt debit card transactions have risen to the level OVER what the fees for paying with a CC used to be, so if VRs were being nixed on the sole reason of increased fees, and they still desired selling them, debit cards would still provide enough of a margin for them to keep them. But they arent allowing debit card purchases either, its cash only. So the increase in fees is clearly not the main reason for disallowing purchase, its just being used as the reason.

Denied in Houston at Westheimer @ Voss. Manager working the register said cash only on VRs. Also tried Westheimer @ Yorktown but no cards in stock.

I just think someone at the top got tired of the "scam" of MSing at CVS. When I worked for T-Mobile prepaid several years ago, there was this error in the system that someone could call in, give a made up Sidekick IMEI number, and get unlimited text msgs on a regular cell phone. I was keen on stopping the scam, so I would shutdown every person that called in doing it. I would even keep a list of people that did it and periodically rechecked their accts to see if they called back and got another agent to change it. Somewhere, somebody realized what is really going on and wanted to stop it. Realistically speaking, how many other bank accts can you completely fund with credit cards and get cashback? Prepaids are supposed to replace B&M banks for the under-served.

went to one of my normal CVS in the DFW area, the associate said that they were just informed that it was changing how we can purchase those and that we can no longer use our cards...I acted surprised and ask when that was happening, she thought tomorrow. Might have the date wrong, but seems the information is correct. I would say at this point, it is not regional...and will just be a matter of time to see the POS is actually changed or they are relying on the associate to police it.
PS...and the store i went to, the VR's were hidden behind some other cards, so i guess that is still going on. |
part of me is glad these things are going from a security standpoint.
i'm shocked at how few numbers are used as part of the PIN, and the captcha they recently installed that Stevie Wonder could read didn't give me any more confidence. seriously for a company that you'd think would have security first-and-foremost, how did NOBODY raise their hand and suggest adding some my digits, make the PIN alpha-numeric, or at least make "checking" the website harder for any potential criminals? |

Has anyone tried to buy MVD today with a CC?
This is disgustingly terrible news for me in NY. Rite Aids are very difficult with the MO's and Walmarts are very difficult as well and in low supply. |

Was able to purchase 5 x $500 beans today at Midwest CVS but turned down for Serve Reload. Manager did mention that today was the last day to purchase VR's with CC. First Speedway and now CVS... the sky is falling!
