To play devils advocate, if increased credit card swipe fees are the reason they are going cash only, then why is it cash only and not cash OR debit? Just sayin....

Uhhh are you serious? Don't think of as credit card swipe fees but rather think of them as processing fees. Debit cards still has processing fees since it still uses Visa, Mastercard or Amex. The only reason why stores went from CC to only cash/DC was for fraud protection since CC creates more exposure since it depends on the customer to pay back the money later while DC automatically withdraws money from your linked bank account right then and there. However if the purpose for the merchant is to save money on processing fees, the merchant has to get rid of CC/DC and go to cash only.

Debit card fees are MUCH lower... like 20 cents a transaction compared to 2%.

Yes, I understand both have processing fees, but Ive always been told by vendors that debit cards are cheaper to process than credit cards, so do they all just not know what they are talking about? Or are they simplifying the equation down and lumping everything together as "processing fees".

Also its 20 cents per transaction regardless of the amount? Doesn't matter if debit card fees are much lower. That is still a fee. We know that CVS already does not pay the often misquoted 1.9 - 2.9% processing fees on CC but yet they opted to get rid of it anyway. It won't matter how low the fees are because due to the sheer volume of MSers buying the lion share of reloadable cards all over the US. Even if it was 0.20% to 0.30% for debit card it all adds up. If it was just that cheap regardless of transaction amount, then I don't understand that change from CVS.
