A cashier told me it was against the law to buy reload cards with CC a few weeks ago. Until his manager came over and cleared it.

They wouldn't enact that law. They would add a tax for doing it. Then call it something cute, like the Affordable Points Act. Or a Pharm-Bean Assessment. Then they would read the law they passed to see what was in it.

^ you think like lobbyist (congressmen are busy doing other things);)....drifting into politics, lets come back to cvs and VR.
For last couple of weeks cannot find any VR in So. Orange County (California). I had 50% success rate. If anyone has info. can PM.

Astrophsx May 4, 2013 9:23 pm

Went to three new CVS stores.. none of them had a spot for the VR's on the rack. All stores had them behind the front counter. One store had them in what appeared to be an unlocked safe. Are they worried people are going to walk out of the store with them?

I'm also wondering if paying the extra dollar and picking up GC's that have pin numbers and loading them at Walmart is a safer option. Mix VR purchases with that to help avoid a FR?

One CVS recently told me that total buy most be under 1K for VRs including the fees. It's the new law I was told. Of course I know this is not correct, but I went along and only put $490 on one of the cards.

Good News and Bad News

I finally found VRs at my 5th CVS. Unfortunately, unlike the other 4, this store accepted only CASH for the purchase of ANY prepaid card, per the manager herself. She said there'd been fraud issues. I think this store ought to just quit selling prepaids.

Down the street, another CVS promptly rang up my third $1,009.90 purchase in 2 weeks - unfortunately not VRs but Visa Prepaids at $2 more for $1,000, plus the time-consuming trip to Walmart.

Why Buy at CVS?

If you can't find or buy VRs there, why buy Visa Prepaids at CVS or any drugstore, for that matter (now that the HH bonus points have gone away).

Best value is probably Chase gift cards bought from them (free if you have a high-value checking account), but other than that, why not buy at Walgreens or Safeway?

I haven't had any problems buying VRs at my 2 favorite CVS stores. I can understand why a store would have "cash only" ....the KMART where I used my Sear Gift Card to purchase Shell and Restaurant Gift Cards is now Cash only as there was fraud. Cashier won't even allow you to pay a $25 Shell Gas Card with a Credit Card.

If no VRs, you can always buy the Visa card with PIN from a Grocery store and receive 5 X for your AMEX Hilton.

I was joking. I know tone doesn't come through the internet, so my fault for not putting an :eyeroll: or a smileyface.

Shame on you for leaving 2.1 points on the table! :)

Several weeks ago, one of the four CVS stores I rotate between went cash only. Although it was definately a "manager decision," I thanked her and left. Just yesterday, a clerk at the store I most frequent called over the manager (who I know pretty well) and mentioned she heard "cash only" as well. The manager told the clerk she just sold me some a week ago and since there was no official bulletin, CC was no problem. The mgr shared VRs were discussed on CVS' Tuesday district call and it's only a matter of time before they're escalated to the Monday regional con call. Ugh!

A couple of member helped me see that (thank you Stou & Bender)! And, the card was due for a super light churn anyway :)

I appreciate getting back to me.

One of the CVS stores here in OC has placed the cards behind the register. Manager said that people were taking unactivated cards from the store. She said at one point their inventory system said they have 80 in stock yet none were on the shelf.

3 weeks ago found a CVS (25 min drive) in PA. Bought $ 2000 in two visits. After that the "junior" manager said cannot sell but cash. Tried going in when she was not on duty, and was able to buy $ 1000. Next trip, the same mgr said will let us buy if we have in State driver's liscence. She was making up the rules as from a previous visit she knew we were traveling.

So onto bigger and better when we find them....CVS of course looses on selling us other stuff. Anyway found their prices higher than others.

So, some crazies are going extreme with this...I don't know if this'll work or not, but if they have their own POS at home, they can activate themselves if a serial isn't tied to the chain or the store itself. And, it makes so easy to steal, too. Nothing but a piece of plastic. Other day, I saw a 'scratched' exposed PIN VR. Christ...

Any case, they found something...if not, they don't take things that do not belong to them off a shelf.
