Can't be a FT'er. He left $80 on the table:)

+1 to Stoughton and WhateverDude.

Nice, benign explanations are invaluable when "questions" come up. My personal favorite is that I use VR's to load prepaid cards that I use for online transactions to reduce the chance of fraud.

Mine is: Better to load my college sons debit card than give him a credit card. Can't trust those kids.... Of course that only works if you look old enough to have a son in college.

My go-to explanation is that I use them for 'budgeting'. Sounds plausible enough and have never been asked to elaborate.

"Banks around here charge such ridiculous fees that it costs me less to buy the gift cards and use those than it does to have a bank account."

Works great, because everyone hates banks and thinks their fees are too high.

My CVS just started implementing the 1K/day rule :td:

Cashier says these are hot items and you can earn airline miles for buying them if you use the right card. 2 weeks ago there were stacks of them, now only 5 :(

I assume the rule applies to each individual CVS location, not the chain. I had no problem with $1,000 + fee at one CVS, and $990 plus fee at another on the same day.

It seems to vary in more ways than you would think possible. By store, by general area, sometimes by cashier...

Yesterday was a first for me. I was actually asked for my ID while purchasing a VR at CVS. My store is pretty lax so, I don't think it's even policy. Never went to that cashier. It's a pretty rural area and I think I maybe one of the only people who buy them. The stack doesn't really seem to go down.

OOOH. That's my story. Everyone likes that one since you can't trust those kids with money.;)

I have several kids in college, that's why I need so many VRs!

Any idea how often do CVS usually restock the VR cards?
Suddenly all the CVS around me are out of stock of the cards. :o

They get stocked at least weekly around me, but the big problem is where the cards get put after the local store gets them. Some times they restock the display, sometimes the put them on the secondary gift card display, sometimes they put them with the phone cards, and sometimes they put them by the registers.

Always more scarce around the first of the month.

Just got the dreaded "altervative payment method required" error at my local (and long dependable) CVS. Clerk said "the law changed and we cant take CC anymore." Unfamiliar clerk, so I'll try again at another store. Hope the fun isn't over.

Likely just a fraud alert on your card.
I get that sometimes with my citi card. Then I check my phone and usually have a text asking me to approve or deny the charge. Once I approve, I swipe again and it works.
