yes. LH upgrades are not competitive. MEX-FRA was 600 us dollars plus taxes from PE to C one way. When i booked the ticket the difference between PE and C was about that for the whole journey not one way...The only semi good (?) offer i had once was from FRA-EZE from PE to C for 560 euros... oh and that was apparently an offer during August. They told me its 800 euros usually...No idea who and why would pay for an upgrade like this when they whole journey was about 800 more from PE to C.

Yes i know that but they have to be a bit competitive. For example Avianca is offering me at the moment for LHR-BOG 400 pounds for an upgrade when the original one way difference was 500 pounds. I am not expecting to go to the airport and get an upgrade for 100 or 200 euros. But i would expect for the upgrade to be competitive compare to the original price. I dont think C/J fare buyers will risk it to fly coach for 100 euros difference. On the other hand many people like me we would pay if the price was reduced lets say by 10% or 20%. Which make sense.
Another good example look at M&S policy. When something is expired on the day they usually reduce it by 10% or 20% but not anymore compare to other companies like TESCO where you can get something reduced by 70% or more. Because they do not want people to go and buy reduced items before the shop closes. But you will not go and find reduced items 10% or 20% higher! Thats what LH does. Defies logic.

In addition to this, those cash upgrades at the gate can cost much less than the original fare difference for high-yield business routes.

Yes true. I was talking about the infamous P fare. A bit out of topic, why would someone pay 4k to fly FRA-ORD when you can fly CPH-ORD in C with Turkish for 900 pounds or 1.5k with Air Canada its beyond my imagination

Some may prefer not to fly Turkish considering the current controversial government which owns the airline... But those can still fly Air Canada which is not controversial!
