I presume you don't have to pay for baggage on a European connecting flight that is part of a longer booking, connecting to a KL longhaul flight at AMS all on the same ticket?

Delta (which seems a model for KLM) offers 2 free checked pieces for Elite on domestic flights...

From KLFlyerRalph's post above:

U kunt 1 koffer kosteloos inchecken, als u:
•Flying Blue-deelnemer bent (Schrijf u in ... u spaart ook meteen Miles!). Flying Blue Elite-deelnemers kunnen 1 koffer kosteloos inchecken.

Does anyone else find that wording strange? If you can check 1 bag in for free if you are a Flying Blue member, then why do they feel the need to state that Flying Blue ELITE members can check 1 bag in for free?

Is it to verify beyond doubt that Elite members only get the 1 free bag? Or did they mean to say that Elite members can check 1 extra bag for free / 2 bags for free?

Elites only get 1 bag for free.

Also from my post:

  • Reist namens een bedrijf met een corporate contract of BlueBiz-account.
  • Een volledig flexibel ticket (boekingsklasse Y of B) binnen Europa boekt.
  • Naar Georgië, Italië, Turkije, de (sic) Oekraïne, Rusland of Wit-Rusland reist.
  • Binnen Europa reist als onderdeel van een intercontinentale reis.
So you don't have to pay when connecting to a intercontinental flight.

Only their E+. Elite get one bag. But up to 9 companions benefit from the status holder's benefits.

Perhaps they'll follow DL's example and waive the first bag fee for FB credit card holders...

You're right, but it's not only their E+, it's for all Skyteam E+.

It's a race to the bottom and KLM becoming more like Ryanair every day!

Looks like one bag is free for elites, for everyone else it's 15EUR. It used to be free for everyone plus one extra bag for elites.

So E+ gets 2 bags free then?

Me thinks its time to get status matched to DL now...

No, all Flying Blue members (regardless of status) get 1 free bag only. It looks like nobody will get a second bag for free anymore, regardless of ticket type or FFP membership (except perhaps when connecting to an intercontinental flight).

There is no mention of Skyteam Elite (Plus) members on the pages linked above, so I don't know where the notion of Skyteam Elite (Plus) members getting a free bag. (But it would seem churlish not to extend the exemption to such flyers).

I got confirmation from KLM that Skyteam partner Elites also get 1 checked bag free.

KLM will then offer flights to more than 30 European destinations at this competitively priced fare. As such, KLM leads the pack in the Netherlands offering customers the broadest range of low-cost destinations.
Additionally, KLM will be separating baggage from the ticket price. This means that with effect from 22 April 2013, passengers in economy class will pay €15 for one piece of hold baggage per flight to destinations within Europe. Anyone who enjoys a relationship with KLM will be exempt. This includes customers who are – or become – members of the Flying Blue Frequent Flyer loyalty programme. This also applies to contracted Corporate Clients, BlueBiz members and passengers in possession of a fully flexible ticket (Y and B classes).

KLM is launching this renewed business model within Europe in response to changing customer behaviour: many existing passengers already travel without hold baggage in Europe. What’s more, passengers increasingly want to ‘customise’ their journeys. This can be achieved through paid options including seat choice, more legroom (Economy Comfort) and, in time, paid lounge access. Customers are free to choose.
