Airport Transportation

The following thread and its wiki provide all the information one needs to know about taking a taxi from Suvarnabhumi Airport: Catching a Taxi at BKK and general Thailand taxi discussion [SEE WIKI FIRST] The wiki discusses the breakdown of taxi fares from the airport to central Bangkok where Grand Hyatt Erawan is located, and addresses the possibility of being slightly overcharged by a taxi driver.

Alternatively, Grand Hyatt Erawan offers airport transfers in its own fleet of silver Mercedes-Benz S-Class and E-class sedans. The prices of these service are S-Class THB 3,300 (net) per one way transfer (per post 1976) and E-Class THB 2,500 (per post 1975) to or from Suvarnabhumi Airport. Guests using this service will be greeted by a representative at the airport, assisted with their luggage, and escorted to the waiting car.

For an additional charge, the hotel can also arrange "Fast Track" (VIP lane) immigration clearance, as well as the option of being met at one's arrival gate by a buggy and escorted through Fast Track immigration. This service is available for THB 1,600+ 7% vat per person, or THB 2,400+ 7% vat per person to include Golf Cart and porter services.

AOT (and perhaps other companies) also provide transfers from and to the airport. Various vehicle types are available at different price points: Camry (THB 1,200 one way), Mercedes E-Class (THB 2,400 one way).

I always use http://www.limousine.in.th for my car needs in BKK incl airport transfers. 1050 THB from BKK to the city, 900 THB city to BKK (incl tolls).

UBER no longer operates in Thailand. Instead, use GRAB. Similar to UBER, prices will vary. On my trip, I was able to get a GRAB for 364 THB from BKK.

Taxi should run between 400-500 THB. If going from the hotel to BKK, the hotel will quote 500 THB. I had to wait for a few taxi's as the first two didn't want to do unless I paid 750 THB.

That's just cheap. These guys are trying to make a living (and usually, support a family). Considering the wealth of their passengers - who are often paying more for one night's hotel than they make in a week - I can't really blame them for trying to squeeze out an extra 100 THB or so.

It suits him well ... the taxi driver should have used the meter just like he agreed to do so when he assumed this job. Bangkok taxis operate on a meter system with fares regulated by Thailand's Department of Land Transport.

The local train ("cityline") runs every 12-15 minutes. The BTS runs every 3-4 minutes most of the day. Shouldn't take 10 minutes from station to Hyatt. About an hour is reasonable. Taxi can be as fast as 35 minutes if little traffic or 2-3 hours if you are unlucky.

You did fine. The meter would have been about 200 and tolls at 10PM are not necessary with street grade travel being mostly unimpeded. Its interesting how uninformed Bell Captains can be and/or they shill for the taxis as well (not saying that's what happens at the GH but all over town it sure does).

Disagree entirely.

Indeed. And the 200 fare is about right for the ride sans tolls. Now the 50baht airport departure will be eaten by the driver and that part is the only thing I find lacking from the scenario.

Yup. And the drivers nonetheless attempt fairly often to charge farangs a flat fee of THB 500 (which is often very close to the actual fare plus a generous tip).

If a passenger feels strongly about the meter, he/she should request that it be turned on immediately upon departure. I personally have stopped arguing with drivers about this, I really don't mind paying 500 baht for a forty minute ride.

A few days ago departing Erawan ~1030am weekday fare was 205 bht.I asked driver to make u-turn on Rajadamari past 4-Seasons rather than go up to Rama 4 to get on highway.
Only 1 tollway @25bht and a little over 30 mins to BKK.

While this route may not always be practical during heavy traffic it is a more direct routing.

I'm arriving in on QF23 at 3PM approx. I'm guessing traffic is peak by the time I clear airport formalities. Train sounding much more enticing than potential 2-3 hrs. My last trip in to BKK arrived late evening - that's when it was horrendous.

Decisions....thanks for all the feedback.

I've been staying at this property for nearly 15 years and was just there last week. IMO, the GH has gone down hill. Too many missed service opportunities. I would give the Four Seasons a try.

Hyatt is great for Diamond members: you get lounge access including breakfast, all day beverages, work areas, computer terminal, access to business center, and happy hour. You can also use your upgrade certs for a suite.

No idea about the 4S next door except to say that it is a great looking low-rise property inside and outside. FT member TRAVELSIG frequent both properties and he can give you better comparison, contact him!

Almost the same here, scheduled arrival is 6:30, so I will be probably out by 7:30 which

Looks like one of the hotel limos. Maybe driver forgot to pull hand brake when parked and vehicle rolled back?
