You did fine. The meter would have been about 200 and tolls at 10PM are not necessary with street grade travel being mostly unimpeded. Its interesting how uninformed Bell Captains can be and/or they shill for the taxis as well (not saying that's what happens at the GH but all over town it sure does).

That's just cheap. These guys are trying to make a living (and usually, support a family). Considering the wealth of their passengers - who are often paying more for one night's hotel than they make in a week - I can't really blame them for trying to squeeze out an extra 100 THB or so.

Indeed. And the 200 fare is about right for the ride sans tolls. Now the 50baht airport departure will be eaten by the driver and that part is the only thing I find lacking from the scenario.
