Definitely worth it.
If you're on Marriott or SPG, I think its definitely worth considering having "some" status at Hyatt.
Hyatt's program is hands down one of the best.
I'm truly disappointed with SPG where you need to be Platinum to even get free internet. (You can forget free breakfast or upgrades).
The drawback with Hyatt is that they don't have that many properties. So, you are traveling outside of metropolitan areas or places with limited business travelers (e.g. South America, Africa) then SPG is a good option.
Marriott is a bit better than SPG, but still has some ways to go in terms of catching up to Hyatt.

I used a suite upgrade cert on my stay at the Denver Grand Hyatt Saturday night using the listed $139 rate. No problem.

Diamond challenge optimal strategy?
I would love your collective help to optimize my Diamond Trial strategy for an upcoming Asia trip. TIA for any help.
I read up on all relevant FT posts. Diamond Trail Offer of 12 nts in 60 days is good until 12/31/11. I have PC Plat, so can do. I have a trip to Asia from Jan 21st to Feb 19th.
We will have 10 nights total in 3 cities that have Hyatts (4 in Tokyo, 3 in Saigon/HCMC, 3 in Hong Kong).
My wife just got the Chase Hyatt card and we are using her 2 free nights at Park Hyatt Tokyo. (I don’t have that card yet as I already have 4 Chase pers cards. I got most recent one got mid Oct so next app o rama not due mid Jan). So that leaves me with 8 potential paid nights on trip (unless I get Chase card also and use 2 free nts on trip then only 6 pd nights). I have existing refundable bookings for other 2 nts in Tokyo at GH Tokyo ($425/nt avg), then 3 at PH Saigon ($300) and 3 at HR TST ($300).
My current plan is as follows. Get trial start date Dec 20. Do some weekend mattress runs at $100 Hyatts nearby to get other 4-6 nts in before leave on trip. Apply for Chase card after get DIA trial so if approved get 2 free nts in suite. Use 2 of 4 suite upgrade certs for PH Saigon and HR TST Hong Kong stays.
Your thoughts?
Should I risk waiting, hoping DIA trial offer still avail in early Jan so get status thru Feb 2014?
Should I risk another Chase app earlier than AOR mid Jan date and go for the Hyatt card for myself before the trip?

My advice - consider the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong. I prefer that side better (less touristy) and One Harbour Road is a great Cantonese Restaurant.

Remember that hyatt place stays count too and when you combine with AAA rate you can often get mr runs below $100

Anyone have any guesses as to whether Diamond trial challenge will be available on 1/1/12?

Just guessing - I would presume that it would be available - possibly with some tweaks - I don't see the challenge / status matching "game" ever going away completely - at least unilaterally by one company Hotel or Airline - having no such program when your competitors have them simply means that your elite ranks will be eroded overtime from poaching (without replacements "coming in").

You should probably figure out if challenges are still available. If you want easy nights do a stopover in ORD and get some rooms there.

Last year was a transition from "regular" status matches - to nothing - to the challenges.

Now to strategize how to best get the 4 nights in I need in addition to the 8 on the trip. Unless something better is announced soon, looks like I will do them between 1/1/12-1/15/12 using the 1500 pt/stay promo.

Is this possible??
a) current diamond status ends on 2/28/12?
b) can i get a diamond challenge right after that?
or do i need to:
a) get a status match to hilton- earn the status with hilton
b) then use that status to ask for diamond challenge in the spring?
will either scenario work?

Diamond challenge avail until 12/31/11 to those with Hilton Gold or DIA, Marriott Gold or Plat, SPG Plat or PC Plat. (So if don't have any of those yet you will need to get one then seek Hyatt challenge later in 2012 when and if they start offering them again). Can take 72 hrs to become effective so better ask for it ASAP. If you get it by y/e, you will have 60 days to get 12 nights in; then you keep Diamond through Feb 2013.

If I am currently diamond can I even ask for a diamond challenge? Or must I wait until after march 1st, when I will drop to plat., and then hope there is a diamond challenge offered at that time??
