I see some posts that HNL required AG inspection for checked luggage and they are not open until 5am. I don't know if this also applied to transfer passenger or they have special arrangement for us.

I'm about to book island air OGG-HNL connecting to HNL-ICN on OZ. They are under two different tickets. OZ flight leaves at 11:40am.
1. Will I be able to check baggage at OGG all the way through, or do I have to collect it and re-check at HNL?
2. Do I have to get OZ boarding pass at the general check-in area at HNL?
3. By when my island air flight should arrive to have a safe connection?
Would very much appreciate your help.

Ok. Will take the suggestion and book Hawaiian airlines then.
Can I ask the same set of questions?

You might consider researching whether if you buy you HA tickets on UA stick, whether HA will inter line since UA and O are *A partners.
If you book on Island Air, they may interline if on UA stock. If you leave a lot of time-6 hours, you are probably ok.
2. ? Sorry
3. This all depends on your risk tolerance. HA is quite reliable, but there are occasions when a plane problem radiates throughout the system and there are substantial delays. Not often, but happens.
I would leave at least a three-hour window, but think about what would happen if you totally miss you OZ flight.
Because I am risk-intolerant, when I fly internationally, I always fly in to my connecting city a day before.

There is a short moving walkway that sometimes is operational, but this is only for a very short part of the journey.
As an alternative, you can connect using the Wiki-Wiki bus.

Arriving "hand luggage only" on AA into Honolulu, is 1h20 sufficient time to make a Hawaiian flight to Kona? The choice is either 1h20 or 2h38. Separate tickets, so my risk, though I hear the standby option if you miss your flight due to a late inbound is pretty cheap.
Thanks in advance

If the AA flight is on time, that is plenty of time. However, you should check in to the HA flight online and a have a mobile boarding pass or have printed one out. There is only one desk, usually with one employee, at the HA gates, so if you have to stand in line to check in/get a boarding pass, you could potentially have trouble making the flight.
