//TOPIC CHECK - STAY ON TOPIC//
Aloha - as a reminder to all, FT's rules specifically state: "FlyerTalk exists for the discussion of frequent flyer programs and the related travel experience. With the exception of the few areas specifically designated for the discussion of other topics, confine your comments as closely as possible to these topic areas and to the topic of the thread and forum in which you are posting." FlyinHawaiian and I recognize that it is easy to intertwine political commentary with the policies advanced by politicians that affect travel to Hawaii. However, we ask that you keep in mind the nature of this Hawaii forum and focus your attention on the policies and their impact on travel to/from/within Hawaii. Commentary about Hawaii's politicians are off-topic, belong in the OMNI forum, and will be deleted if posted on this thread. We ask for your kokua and cooperation. When will Hawaii re-open for tourism?

I would probably be fine with a "tourism bubble," if it means we could make full use of the FS Maui property. We would miss out on the nearby restaurants we love, but it's far better than a full-blown closure.

The Hawaii stats should have an asterisk to show its Oahu county numbers and not the outer islands which still remain very low when it comes to activity/spread.

I did make it to the Big Island on Saturday with my dog but I will say I have gotten into war zones easier. The amount of effort involved to get over here now (especially with an animal) may not be for everyone and that is putting it mildly. One tip for sure, if you can avoid interisland travel now do it. That just adds another laying of hassle. Hunkering down for my two weeks with a couple of glitches locally like one of my AC's out and worst of all no internet in my office but eventually worked most problems out over the last 48 hours. Hooked into a great food delivery service as well.

What I don’t understand is why the state hasn’t spent some of the federal COVID money on buying out a bunch of hotel rooms to isolate people who get sick or have had high-risk exposures. Cases don’t have to turn into clusters, but we have a lot of people with no good options for isolating themselves.

The state has acquired hotel rooms on Oahu, Hawaii, and Maui to accomdate healthy people that need to live away from crowded positive households. DOH says the program exists, but won't say which hotels or which people due to privacy. They did say its funded through CARES funds.

Don't believe everything you read on the internet. If you do, you would believe that Maui firefighters are going to let you burn to death, and that risk is worse than COVID-19.

LOL. A good friend works at the fire department, funding isn’t going anywhere for them. They would like more of course especially with this dry summer, but they are doing fine.

Just spoke with local tech guy and he said he did self quarantine at a local hotel (on Big Island) a couple of months back due to a possible exposure issue. It may have been through the same program. He did two weeks in a hotel and was fine. Tested neg I believe upon leaving the "quarantine hotel".

I know of some people who have quarantined themselves in hotels upon returning from travel, but at their own expense, which won't work for some of the families that seem to be driving part of the spread.
I have no idea what's going on at the Maui FD. I do know that state and county governments are going to be in a deep, deep hole even if the feds do come through with more help. I don't have a lot of confidence that our leaders will manage through that particularly well, but I don't imagine we'll be disbanding any public safety agencies. Just more that we'll get even worse at doing important stuff while continuing to do a bunch of silly stuff, also badly.

The firefighters in Hawaii are among the best in the nation. The issue isn't whether they want to serve or are funded to serve. The issue is COVID-19 is spreading in the firehouses, requiring firefighters to quarantine for 14 days whether or not they're showing symptoms. You have 1 COVID positive firefighter in a room with 10 others, that's 11 firefighters you're down.
In my community, they're already warning that COVID is leaving us extraordinarily vulnerable to firefighting. (Our battalion chief was the first to get it.)

Your point is very valid though, in fact incredibly important.

Well, just got a call from Mauna Lani. They have unilaterally postponed their opening date to Oct 1st, before the official governor's announcement.
That's a shame, I have lined up the trip for our anniversary in Sept.
