I'm too lazy to check, but will this improve connections to/from the US, and perhaps Russia? Maybe that's the reason?

Most likely. On this moment flying from HAM to JFK, ORD and LA via HEL is impossible because of too late arrival.

AY will also add a 3rd daily flight to VIE from 29th March 2020. The new flight is:

AY1477 HEL-VIE 21:35-23:00 DailyX6
AY1478 VIE-HEL 06:45-10:10 DailyX6

And a 6th daily flight to CDG:

AY1585 HEL-CDG 15:30-17:35 Daily
AY1586 CDG-HEL 18:30-22:25 Daily

This flight is timed only 30 minutes earlier than current 1577/1578 which means there must be a lot of demand to Paris.

There always was a lot of demand, though I'm not sure what's the proportion of AF passengers on the route.

The evening flight has been re-timed one hour later than before for a short while

Strange schedule. Who wants to arrive in VIE that late? Austrian tourists visiting HEL, I suppose, but how many are there... Also, the early morning flight leaves terribly early. Enables VIE-HEL-JFK, but...

I don't think terminal 2D can accommodate wide-body aircrafts. Maybe sending more small planes is more practical even if it does not improve the flexibility of the schedule.

(In fact, there seems to be very very few wide-body intra-Schengen flights at CDG, as opposed to ORY. Though, there's a domestic CDG-RUN at 2C.)
