Because if you want to fly j or f and have a confirmed seat it's useful. Also you may wish to keep earning via your credit card.

Upgrade reward increases
I have just seen that if you want to upgrade from DXB-LIS it has risen from 32500 to 57500 on a saver ticket. Seems a bit unfair on those who bought tickets before these changes were made. This 40% increase will certainly have a detrimental effect on most Skyward Members.
Assume the Skyward Program is being attack due to decreases in fuel prices. Of course Emirates have come unstuck due to buying oil futures at a much higher price than today's market, hence they have to get their money back in other ways.

I just noticed this too. On my outbound trip (BOS-CCU) I noticed it was 72,500 to upgrade the trip from Y saver to J (one way). Now, as I prepare for my return trip, it's increased to 118,750 miles. Seems like a very steep increase indeed. I was only planning to upgrade my DXB-BOS leg (originally 57,500 miles to upgrade) and now it's 95,000 miles. Which is actually a 65% increase.

Old earning rates, yes, but an upgrade would likely be considered a new transaction.

It's a real shame if that's the case and I'm glad I used all my points for j to f's recently.

I just last night upgraded a ticket bought before the new fares were introduced and the mileage cost was at the old rates (I had a W fare, which under the new system is a Flex, not Flex Plus and so on the sector I was upgrading the new cost is 60% more) - so they definitely have the capacity to do it automatically. Mileage earning is also showing the old rates.
This is a ticket I bought in February, so after the 31 Jan cut-off, but under the old fare regime.

Any changes with upgrade availability?
what's now the best option to check availability for upgrades _before_ we have ticket?
EF "D" inventory?
this "trick" to check it on EK webpage (J Saver reward ticket) is now not working?

What a lousy way to lose your miles value.

However - when I went to the upgrade page, I was in fact shown the old style screen (but MMB was the new format).

Have you gone to Manage My Booking and actually processed the upgrade though? On the mileage calculator, it showed that the cost was actually the higher cost, but when I went to MMB, the actual mileage cost on confirmation screen was the old, lower amount.

Once available I will update it here.

It's clearly going to take a while before this new regime beds down totally - both in terms of the ongoing IT glitches as reported here, and folk getting used to the new fare types + mileage rates etc .....
And until then, I can see some fraught conversations taking place with EK call centre personnel - not all of whom are always well-informed on EK policy & systems even at the best of times ......
Specifically on the matter of the clunky website (as distinct from the, ahem, 'merits' of the actual changes) I am in no doubt that the EK boffins would have done a lot of lab testing before the launch but of course it's hard to get everything right before the site is used for real ......

Just checked MMB. The upgrade from DXB/SIN is still the old rates.
I guess those of us who purchased the tickets prior to implementation should upgrade whenever possible.

I can confirm that my ticket (purchased in Jan) for DXB-BOS was upgraded 20 minutes ago (at OCLI) for 57,500 from Y saver to J. That is the "old" rate.
I wish I realized this before depositing an additional 25000 miles into my account. Oh well, live and learn. Now I'll end up with 42,000 miles left in my account....not much I can do with that, but I guess I have 3 years left to figure it out before they expire.
