But it can't make money sitting on the ground. It may, however not lose money by incurring the costs you mention. Presumably this has been influential in EK's decision making.

EK is a business trying to make money based on business sense, not an armchair CEO or frequent flier's dream or reasoning.

I don't have the numbers on how much does EK pay for landing fees, airport fees, crew hotel fees, expenses on single sector for certain route, but it doesn't mean one can simply say "aircraft may not lose money by incurring the costs (I mentioned) as long as it stays in the air, not on the ground", unless you know how exactly much EK is paying.

SIN market is quite competitive where you have low-cost carriers lowering average fare and (on some cases) destroying yield.

If EK thinks the average price tag on a certain route (ex-SIN, ex-DXB, and from any of the EK worldwide destination) is able to offset the operational costs and expenses on the long run, then they will start a tag-on route. If EK thinks it's not worth it then they'll just let the plane idle on the ground (at least it faces 0 risk of losing money).

You also probably forgot the fact that when the oil price was over $100/barrel 2-3 years ago, the more and the longer an aircraft stays in the air, it makes more loss.

Now that's a milestone bringing the 77W fleet to 60 examples. ;)

ung1 Oct 21, 2011 2:48 am

The yields will always be higher in DXB/SIN and vv. If EK can fill up the plane at high fares, they don't need to sell tickets to and from XYZ. A tag on only makes sense if seats are flying empty and filling them up offsets the cost of the additional flights.

SIN has very low parking and landing fees, though crew hotels would be more expensive than elsewhere.

Emirates has been talking about this for years. Using NZ for trans-pacific is likely too low yielding, and using Australia has difficulties getting rights (even when rights are granted they are sometimes arbitrarily withdrawn).

I don't think it happening anytime soon. It was way too low-yielding but, it's not right choice for EK to start direct flight to USA from SYD, MEL, BNE, CNS. However, EK will not able to have a fifth freedom traffic rights through DXB-Australia-USA.

If it takes you 10 seconds to copy everything, why not spend extra 5 seconds to copy the link or at least citing the source?

Especially it took me over an hour to go through the changes route by route, month by month. Seriously I'm thinking to throw in the "no copy/no right mouse click" html script when I do the next major upgrade for the website.
