It doesn't bother me to read about wines at a slightly higher price point. But I'm still seeing great bargains in what I consider good, everyday wines. For those folks in the Twin Cities, this week MGM is selling Concannon Crimson and Clover on sale for $5.55. Definitely worth a try if you are interested in a blend.

Love bargain hunting for wine. At under $12 a bottle, I can pour it out (or more likely freeze it for sangria) if I don't like it.

Just picked up a $6.50 bottle from Costco earlier this week. They said it got 90 points from Wine Spectator, so I figured it couldn't be too bad (or at least it would make good sangria )

Chateau Chantemerle
Blaye Cotes de Bordeaux
2009

It was shockingly good, if a little bit of a lighter style than I usually pick. I think I'm going to go back tomorrow and pick up a couple of cases.*

Last year my 'case' red wine was the Sterling Vintner's Collection Meritage. I find the Sterling label to be pretty reliable, and usually under the $12 price point with sales and discounts.

*ETA: I did buy a couple of cases, and either the QC is totally random or else every third or fourth bottle is corked. I have had several bottles that I have had to pour straight down the sink.

Side note:

About 1/3 of wines reviewed by WS get a 90+ rating.

Unfortunately, WS has become like an American elementary school where 80% of the kids are "above average"!

Well, when I went back to get some cases, it turns out it was Wine Enthusiast. No idea if that is more or less prestigious...

But if a $6-7 dollar bottle is in the top 1/3, that's still a bargain by my definition. At that price point, I'm lucky to find "inoffensive" or "drinkable", so "good" is a pleasant surprise.

Costco sold French wine Hegarty 2010 for 11.99 last year. Can't find it anymore. Hoping they carry the 2011 version. It was simply amazing for 12 bucks.

Wonder what % are advertisers ? Same phenomenon w/ another of Shankin's magazines Cigar Aficionado. Still, both are good reads IMO.

Hey, where is everybody? Hope you all haven't graduated to the $30-40 bottles.

Anyway, one of my current red blend favorites is Rare Red "Grape 4 Blend" red table wine from Scottocellars -- on sale in my area for $7.95.

average vs. median

You might want to use the term median. With average it is quite possible and not uncommon to get 80% above (or below) the average.

Take the set {1,1,8,9,9,8,9,9,10,9} - The sum is 73 & the average is 7.3.

The following numbers {8,9,9,8,9,9,10,9} (80% of them) are above average.

Did not enjoy the A to Z Pinot Noir I bought this week at Costco for ~$12-$13. It gave me heart burn. A friend said you can't get a really good bottle of PN unless you spend ~$40 or more. But I've had a decent PN that was abt. $20.

Root1 carmenere. Under $10. My wife also liked their Sauvignon Blanc.

My local grocery store sells the boxes of Big House wines for about $18. So $4.50 a bottle. I like their Usual Suspects wine. Decent for a glass or 2 during the week without breaking the bank.

Astica Malbec 2012
Cuyo~Argentina

I buy it for about $6 a bottle when buying a case. Let it breath for 5-10 minutes and it's great. Goes well with lots of things. Given it to a few wine snob friends who complimented me on my selection.

Based on my experience, I would say I draw the line for Pinot Noirs at $20. Anything above is a good bet, anything below is a reach.

I would think that is hugely region specific. You might not get a good Burgundy or RRV for under $20, but there are a plethora of decent Alsatian Pinot Noir's that sell for less than that, as well as Spatburgunder, Sancerre Red, etc. One that I like a lot is Domaine de L'Ocre Rouge (I think I might have referenced upthread, not going to check). It's a VDT that sells here for about 8 euros.
