hosting a sleepover with a friend who loves ramen…
Carryout from Coco’s ramen, Sf ca - first time here since February 2020 if not prior… it’s Chinese-owned and decent enough for me as there’s a great ramen combined with sushi and sashimi. Most Japanese places just don’t have all of the above. as much as I love authentic, there are times that I just want it all. spicy ramen with pork shoulder shared: spicy tuna roll Tuna poke bowl with avocado & mango https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...9232a13c6.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...5951e1888.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...6f1e6c90b.jpeg |

Sugarfire BBQ in St. Louis. My favorite BBQ spot!
Ribs Brisket Broccoli salad Baked beans White BBQ sauce St. Louis sweet BBQ sauce Carolina mustard BBQ sauce I love Sugarfire and last time I was in St. Louis (almost 2 years ago) we got Sugarfire takeout only to arrive home and realize they forgot our baked beans. I don't order baked beans anywhere but Sugarfire, and it would have been a 40 minute round trip to get more so I had to do without. Happy to scratch that itch yesterday. Alas, we did not get the pork belly hush puppies, which I also love. |

I had meant to post more about the Wolfgang Puck experience. My only previous encounter with Puck was in an airport. I suppose it was a better than Popeye’s or TGI Friday’s, but maybe not much. This was way better. Service was excellent, the atmosphere was inviting and I always enjoy watching an open kitchen. It was a little noisy but that would be my only complaint. The appetizer was interesting. I meant to ask what the second cheese was, but we enjoyed it all. I really liked the honeycomb, reminded me of eating wax Halloween novelties only sweeter. I have not eaten a schnitzel since Figlmüller in Vienna years ago. This tasted similar but was much smaller. Good potato salad but I would have liked a little applesauce on the side.
Mrs BV ordered rigatoni Alfredo which was superb and my father in law ordered spaghetti and meatballs which I considered an odd choice but he liked it and ate it all. No desserts but they both tried the house Cabernet (Puck has a winery?) and said it was better than what they usually drink (what isn’t?). https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...a0871de91.jpeg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...f4e0679f3.jpeg |

I've been lazy about posting lately, and dinners have trended more toward quick meals or takeout as we've been busy. Our last Sitka Shares shipment included several types of salmon. My wife made a baked Coho salmon last night. I don't really care for salmon, but the Sitka fish is so good that I didn't mind it. She rubbed mustard on it and then some type of spice mix on top of that. It was way too mustard-y :).
Today, we're going to use a thick filet of King salmon to try making lox. A new experiment for us. |
