Mmmmm, that looks so good! Took our nephews to the Cubs game last weekend. After a little searching, I finally found a concession stand selling the Wrigley Smokie, something I haven't had in a few years because they keep moving things around. Covered in mustard, grilled onions, tomato, and sport peppers. It may even have been worth the 15 min wait in line due to silly COVID line re-configurations.

For any other searchers, it's sold at the stall in far right field, last food stand on that side. :)

I may try it with cream of broccoli soup next time I make it. Add a little broccoli to the mix too. :D

Years ago, they sold Oscar Mayer Smokie Links all over the ballpark. On weekends, friends would gather at my house on Racine Ave. and we’d walk to the park and sit in the bleachers. Smokies were usually on the menu. I was exited a few years ago when they started selling this new version (Vienna, I think), so good with the grilled onions.

Yep - I've been a partial season ticket holder for a long time. It was only just a few years ago that they "improved" all the concession stands and Smokies became a specialty itm. To be honest, it's probably better overall, but I miss some of the old stuff. And the old limited menu meant you didn't have to walk back and forth between stands trying to decide after you've had a few beers :).

Experimenting with asparagus in the gas pizza oven. It turned out great with light charring of the tips for flavor.

Roast chicken thighs with potato / scallion with capers in the sauce
nyt recipe - next time I’ll use a rack for the chicken and I’ll need more cooking time than the recipe’s 30-35 minutes (at 450!)

Last night's dinner was Costco frozen meatballs heated in Rao's marinara, served atop fried polenta slices.

Tonight we're having my wife's homemade pork and prawn sinigang.

Mr. CE's out tonight so I raided the freezer...made TJ's scallion pancake topped with a fried egg and drizzle of soy sauce, which was a very tasty combo!

Carry out from Lou Malnati. The nice thing about their rewards program is that instead of getting, e.g., "a medium cheese pizza," like some might do, you get the pizza with whatever you like on it. So, a $29.00 pizza for free!

gfunkdave Sep 17, 2021 8:27 pm

Went to my dad’s golf club tonight and had the Dynamite Scallops (topped with Dynamite Sauce, broiled, and topped with furikake chili threads, scallions and breadcrumbs) and the roasted Brussels sprouts (topped with aioli and Parmesan).

And some of my mom’s tater tots, which were deep fried and crispy.

They serve your mom's tater tots at your dad's golf club? It must really be his club!

I bought some chuck crest and tried a little experiment to see if I could make steaks out of such a tough cut. I guess I basically turned the BBQ into a sous vide machine. I kept the temperature in a tight range between 65c-75c and held it there for 9 hours. You don't really want to go much below 65 or you're sitting in the danger zone, and above 75 probably starts pushing the water out of the meat. What came out was tender but still cooked medium. The meat sat at 56c for a solid 4 hours while, I guess, the connective tissue melted. This would be awesome done with a standing rib roast.

Did you have the Korean or Taiwanese scallion pancake? The latter is a newish offering and is quite good!

I stopped at Bubba’s Crab to see what was available. He had steamers on the chalkboard but wouldn’t sell them. He didn’t indicate what was off, but he wasn’t comfortable. Gotta love an honest fishmonger. So I bought a dozen middle necks for an appetizer, served with lemon and melted butter. The haddock looked good, so I baked it scrod style with butter and cracker crumbs. Served with a sweet potato and chopped salad of kale, cabbage, carrots, celery and cucumber sprinkled with everything bagel seasoning.

I’d recommend it. It’s nice and flaky, with a good flavor and texture.

Another practice pizza (this time feta and eggplant) on the gas pizza oven. Still getting a hang of the flame control, but consistency is improving.

I’d say you’re doing pretty good. All wood fired pizza’s I’ve ordered always have a few charred spots on them.

Courtesy of a fridge/freezer that died overnight, Saturday night's dinner was some beer brats, mashed potatoes, and raw veggies with homemade ranch dip. Beer brats were in the freezer but had defrosted too much by the time we realized it to safely refreeze by shifting to other freezer. The container of mashed potatoes had defrosted as well.

Wednesday night, I will roast the turkey that started defrosting so we will have turkey tacos sometime this coming weekend.

Sadly, neither variety was in stock. I suspect they were temporarily dislocated by seasonal pumpkin products.

Hmmmm...I can think of a lot worse dead-freezer meals. Sorry about the appliance, but those could be planned meals for me!

Last night, buffalo chicken burgers on the grill. Only another month or so of nice grilling season here, so we enjoyed the moment. Tonight, tuna steaks. Based on the on and off again rain, probably cooked inside.

Turkey taco night

I’m so excited - book club tomorrow at a restaurant so I can get totally wasted at book club dinner. So happy!!!

Oh no! Sorry to hear that. I hope they come back soon once the pumpkin craze season dies down.
