steamed dumplings tonight
|
Round 2 of the Sitka halibut tonight. Fish tacos. Flour tortillas because that's what we have. Homemade pickled red onions. Homemade blender sauce, with Kewpie mayo, lime juice, garlic, onion, cilantro and jalapenos picked from our garden this morning...it was delicious straight out of the blender :).
Garlic Fest last night was a bit of a dud, I suppose another big thanks to COVID. While the Weds night market has a dozen or more food trucks and tents, there were only 4-5 special garlic vendors. But my wife got to try black garlic ice cream, so it was a minor success. |

Carnitas taco buche (head) taco By the way, aren't you a fan of Mizrahi Grill? We finally tried it a couple nights ago. Very good, authentic food. Of course being a certified Kosher restaurant it was quite expensive. We split the combo appetizer and a mixed grill (chicken and beef, I forgot the menu name) entree for $40. But it was also plenty of food for us. Probably would go back for lunch, where we could easily get by for $15/person, but maybe not dinner since we don't need Kosher. Would definitely buy pitas to go, as they were some of the best we've had. |

Mrs braslvr's favorite as well, and something that was very common in the 60s-70s that you rarely see these days.

As a 70's child, this was my favorite too. I asked for this on every birthday. Haven't seen it in many years. At some point my favorite changed to chocolate w/chocolate. Now I'm wondering if that's just because yellow w/chocolate disappeared.

If you want to fancy up that popcorn dinner (for guests or a special occasion lol) try this version. I have made it a few times using microwave popcorn and it is good. https://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/...recipe-1943704

Funny you bring up Mexican though. We love Palo popcorn, out of Sheboygan Falls, WI. They sell some here in the Chicago area, but we have friends who bring us the flavors that aren't available here. It's not fresh and hot, but the most addictive snack ever. They brought us the Mexican Street Corn version a few weeks ago and it's the only flavor I won't seek out again. https://www.palopopcorn.com/shop.html Full disclosure, I've not tried the Ranch & White Cheddar yet. The rest are amazing. |

Hundreds of recipes online for oven-baked wings, none of them work. I can get reasonably close by grilling on a hot grill. Nice flavor and some crispiness, but they end up more dry inside than in a fryer. Too bad wings have become so widely popular and subject to rising prices. Back only 10-15 years ago, I could find a different bar in Chicago near my house with 25-cent wings one day a week to cover Sunday-Friday. Still, this is one of those meals that is best left to restaurants IMO. Last night - a homemade pasta sauce with spaghetti using herbs from our garden. Tonight we're planning on eating the leftovers unless one of us gets ambitious enough for takeout. |

I agree, without a deep fryer you really can't replicate at home. You could deep fry batches in a pot of course, but it would take a while to get the amount I'd want!

I agree, the price of wings have gone through the roof. As I understand it, it is a supply and demand issue. Wings became so popular over the past decade and supply has not kept up. I know from personal experience that large packages of 20 wings, which cost 6 or 7 bucks a few years ago, are now 17 or 18 bucks.
