Got to see my old roommates for our annual guys' weekend. One of us is an oenophile with a giant cellar. Here's what we had...

Talisman Red Dog Pinot 2014 served with lamb chops and cilantro lime rice.

A great little tasting room if you find yourself in Glen Ellen (near Sonoma).

This turned out to be a good afternoon sipper on a hot late August afternoon.

Very fresh, nice acidity, and just the tiniest amount of sweetness on the finish.

On the night of August 29, we got to enjoy a bottle of Yalumba “The Y Series” Viognier with our one skillet jambalaya. This was done by flashlight because we live in New Orleans and that is when Hurricane Ida hit us. No electricity, no Wi-Fi, no cell service. On top of that it was my birthday “dinner”. What a way to celebrate. I don’t know what’s going on, but it’s becoming a habit. First Katrina and now Ida. 😂😂

A big wine that went well alongside a Chicago style Italian Beef.

An unremarkable 2018 Chianti Rufina alongside an equally unremarkable Trader Joe's frozen pizza.

A 12 year old California chard? Was it all vinegar?

Or wait, you don't like wine. You were just cooking with it? I bet it makes a nice vinegar...

I discovered a 2010 Turley at my parents' the other day and it was very past its prime.

Okay, not as much fruit as I was expecting and you taste all of the 14.5% alcohol. This was to be a "pizza wine" and after a glass, not sure it was worth the $17 price.

FWIW, an overnight on the counter did this wine no good. I poured the rest down the drain and opened a Kirkland Signature old vine zin to have alongside bbq beef ribs tonight. Ole' Kirkland was half the price, and punched well above it's weight.

Your Italian reds are quite impressive. They will pair well with the steak. You don’t mind having a boarder in your cellar?

Barbaresco 2008 is still a kid, will have to leave it for a couple of years there. Montepulciano was fabulous, the color seemed to be ink, it was the best wine of the night. Brunello was better if drunk last year, it already started its decline.
