Another tip for keeping whole fish from sticking to the grates -- cut thick onion rings and toss them in oil, then put them on the grate and the fish on the onions. It elevates them a bit and the fish won't stick to the onions.

Lunch today at Oren’s Hummus in Palo Alto. It’s really nice part of University Ave is closed off for outdoor dining. Too full for Salt & Straw across the street. 😭 But I had a nice “not too sweet” bottled coffee at IKEA a couple hours later.

I think the trick is to make sure the grates are very hot, but the fire is only medium. I let the kettle come up to temperature and then cooked the fish direct over the coals with the lid on which kept the fire under control. I also made sure the grates were really clean and then well oiled – as was the fish.

I promise you most of us won’t think any less of you if you eat non organic berries, or regular pizza (non panic), or shop anywhere besides Costco, Whole Foods, etc, etc. Really…..I promise! :)

Another option is to purchase a fish basket. While they don’t hold all fish (larger sizes won’t fit), they get the job done and are relatively cheap. Just make sure to oil them well too. Available at Lowe’s, Home Depot, or your favorite BBQ supply shop.

Back in the 1970s, my grandpa, when he was a working man, walked a block once a week to have a steak lunch at The Burger Pit. It’s no longer there, the building has actually been razed. A couple years ago, I heard there was a BP in San Jose. After a day at the Triton Museum of Art in Santa Clara and some shopping at the Asian grocery store, my dad and I stopped in south SJ to have a very late lunch on our way home. Two ribeye steak sandwiches and fries, plus a shared side salad for $25. The restaurant looked and smelled just like old times. 🥰
