For lunch, I’m having beef stir fry. With cashews, snap peas, zucchini, red bell pepper and onions served over rice. Bitterballen with sambal pedas, and perfectly ripe large papaya.

Mr Gfunk went to Trader Joes the other day and came home with a kringle (kind of the best Danish you've ever had). I mostly like their almond flavor. TJ's usually only has one flavor in stock. This time they had pumpkin caramel with nuts. I don't really like pumpkin but after being open for a couple days the pumpkin flavor is mostly gone and it just tastes sweet and caramelly. He hasn't had any of it yet and I have eaten about a quarter of it so far...

You can order them online too but I definitely don't need that sitting in the house all the time!

eta: Today for lunch I made grilled cheese (mine with tomato) and tomato soup. Funny they call it "grilled" cheese. It's really a fried cheese sandwich...a fried fat sandwich, if you will.

And sometimes "toasted cheese". I'm not sure it's really fried either, unless you're dunking it in oil. Probably the best description would be "griddled cheese sandwich".

Went to the local Trader Joe's looking for that Danish mentioned upthread, they were out!!! :(

Shopped for some home made pizza and here is what I used to make couple of them:

- pizza crust
- EVO oil to brush the crust
- thinly sliced onions
- thinly sliced garlic
- kalamata olives
- olive tapenade
- Feta cheese crumbled
- Provolone Cheese 5 slices
- grated Parmesan Reggiano cheese
- anchovy fillets
- baked for 15 minutes in a 425F preheated oven
- fresh basil after baking

If you're in the LAX area, the best kringle that I've ever had is at Copenhagen Pastry in Culver City.

Kringle

"What most people associate with Danish pastry is the kringle with almond paste and custard throughout the pastry and topped with sugar and almond flakes"

Thank you for the recommendation - looks delicious. My attorney is in Culver City and I like to stay as far away from there as possible! ;)

I'm in the Santa Ana / Costa Mesa / Newport Beach / Irvine area in what's referred to as South Coast Metro! We have Moulin and La Petite Sourie bakeries close by but neither carry such a good looking Danish!

Trader Joe sells balls of pizza dough that are decent. Not as good as what I get at my local pizzeria but still ok.

Thanks, will definitely try it when in the neighborhood as I love pastries and almonds. This reminds me of Babette's Feast!

the missus uses TJ's pizza dough all the time. But, as usual, I was too lazy to deal with dough. This organic ready to use pizza crust was very convenient! :)

I used Jacques Pépin recipe as a guide from this timeless video:

I've found the unfrozen pizza doughs at many grocery stores to be pretty good. The frozen ones not so much. Mariano's and Jewel here both have good ones. Pretty much any of them are better than the pre-cooked ones they sell, and the only extra effort is rolling them out.

I saw a taste test story somewhere in the past that said Trader Joe's and Primo Taglio (Safeway) were the best store bought pizza crusts. I haven't found either in my local stores.

You haven't found the refrigerated pizza dough in TJ? There are 3 different kinds...i guess a lot of people are making pizza...mine are almost never out of all 3.

I used to really enjoy making pizza with TJs dough, Rao's marinara, and other toppings oven baked in a well oiled cast iron skillet. Pan pizza perfection.
