My (LoganFlyer's) guide to maximizing your bump chances on Delta:

https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/30484249-post1713.html

(The concise version:

1. Use the App to see if more people are looking for seats than there are seats available. As part of the Customer Commitment, gate agents, phone res agents, and tickets agents must tell you if a flight is overbooked if you ask. (They don't need to say by how many seats.)
2. Do everything you can to get on the volunteer list through OLCI or a kiosk at the airport, since some GAs use that list.
3. Talk to the GA as soon as the gate opens up--don't wait for them to make an announcement.
4. Don't be afraid to negotiate with the GA.)

Monday, November 9 @ ATL:

Delta was overbooked:

9 bumps for 738a - 929a ATL - MIA DL 566 $800.00
7 bumps for 735a - 901a ATL - IND DL 796 - $800.00 - later turned out to just two.
Wasn't sure of exact number: 841a - 957a ATL - RDU DL 1294 $500.00.

Crazy busy morning at ATL that day.

Hypothetical:

You are traveling with your family of 4. Final leg of your return flight home is overbooked. Your itinerary was booked separately from the rest of the family's. If flight is potentially overbooked, do you volunteer?

Not really getting your question... You could offer to vol as yourself or group of 4. Could even do 2 vols and 2 continue on.

I guess I wonder... is it worth annoying your wife and having her travel with the kids (who are well behaved) without you to get the compensation?

You could put the kids on a different flight and pay the UM fees with the VDB compensation proceeds.

Sounds like a better question to ask your wife or a marriage counselor!

Are you confirming you can use VDB dollars to pay UM minor fees?!

I don't think the VDB credits can literally be used to pay for anything but plane tickets, but surely a $500 VDB is worth more than the $200 UM fee. Most DL FFers would happily pay $200 for a $500 DL credit.

I agreed, but I think by the statement you made 99% of people would read that would think you could use DL VBD proceeds...

If they're desperate enough, you can try asking them to waive UM fees. (But with 2 adults and 2 children, any number of VDBs can be handled without requiring UM fees.)

True, but if someone is thinking of taking a VDB and leaving family on the flight, another option might be for the person and spouse to escape from the flight containing their offspring.

Got 2 bumps DTW-ATL on Sunday afternoon.
#1 - $500
#2 - $400

Arrived only 2.5 hours later than originally scheduled. Quite pleased, especially since the flight I was initially bumped to had mechanical issues and was delayed 3 hours.

I have never been bumped twice in a row. How does that happen? Good score, though!

What form were they paid in?

SEA-YYC yesterday evening. Took a $500 voucher for a 3 hr later flight on Alaska instead. Caught up in emails in lounge so wasn't too much of a biggie. Agents very appreciative and also threw in some drink chits that I can give to some friends on future flights.

Checked bag was expedited over to AS efficiently with nothing required my end, and all worked out drama free.
