Delta has 6 of the 10 B777-200LR's stored somewhere (1 at BHM, 3 at MZJ, 2 at VCV), do we (or Delta for that matter) expect those 6 to ever return to service? Will Delta ever restart ATL-JNB or JFK-BOM or LAX-SYD passenger routing sometime this year? If no - then the remaining 4 LR's need not stay in use either. The Airbus A350-900's (as does the B777-200ER's {which are also supposed to be "retired" this year}) DO have the range to for the JFK-BOM and LAX-SYD routes. The SYD and JNB routes have been Deltas' for quite some time and one would guess quite successful (profitable) - otherwise DL would have dropped them some time ago. With that being said, will South African Air pick up the JNB routing and / or will Qantas Air pick up the SYD routing then? I don't seem to remember if either of those companies are part of the Sky-team group.

I would like to hear some additional expertise. I am attempting to figure out how Delta plans to retire all 18 B777 aircraft by the end of the year and use their existing 13 A350-900 aircraft to do it. DTW-ICN is the only 359 route that has returned with passengers. According DL's schedule, there are 5 routes being added July 1st: ATL-ICN, MSP-ICN, DTW-HND, MSP-HND, DTW-PVG. So far so good (some of these could come back initially as less than daily (and probably will). August 1st adds 1 more: MSP-AMS and that makes 7 routes, and so far, still so good through the end of 2020. On January 1st 2021, Delta appears to add 5 routes (some appear to be place holders and may be converted to 359's from 777's before said date: ATL-HND, LAX-HND, ATL-PVG, LAX-PVG, LAX-SYD. This tallies to a total of 12 routes (Delta had 9 or 10 359 routes before the pandemic reduction). So if some of these 12 are not fully daily, the current 13 359's will probably be able to work the schedule. (At one time) Delta was supposed to receive 2 additional aircraft this year (totaling 15) and not sure if those have been delayed until next year or not. The final 2 routes (which will need the "High Gross Weight" versions of the A350-900) are the only 2 remaining that need to be converted (JFK-BOM and ATL-JNB), but as Delta has said, the B777's WILL be retired by end of year 2020. Thoughts, Ideas, Creativity, etc. Thanks to any and all who respond ahead of time.

I just hope they don't end up in the situation like they did several years back when they were short on aircraft for the tpac long haul and it ended up with rotating delays for several routes. If I recall that was when they had some MX issues with 747s while others were in for interior refurbs and created quite a mess for a couple months.

I personally would gladly welcome that scenario (even with rotating delays)

Not sure when BOM will come back... but the JNB flight would require two aircraft if they want to run it daily. Same those TPAC routes also... can't run anything daily from DTW/MSP/ATL to Asia with only one aircraft each. A turn with one aircraft is only feasible from west coast cities.

it's not much different than playing Railroad Tycoon--except that you get to compare your strategy with DL's. No harm, no foul and probably fun for the people involved. I can see how it would be more interesting than a game and educational because you get to see how a real-world market responds to DL's strategy and then war game how your strategy would work.

Hi, i have a seating question about DL One Suites on the 777 for an upcoming (hopefully it happens) trip.
I know I want to sit on the true window seat so an even number row. Unfortunately Row 4 is taken on both sides. Do you suggest Row 2 or Row 6? Does anyone know which galley on this 777 is the louder/busier one? Also, prefer not to be near the lav.. Is row 2 closer to its respective lav in the front than Row 6 is to the rear lav or is it the other way around? or is pretty much equal distance. Any other thoughts as to which is better? I figure Row 2 will get food service first but Row 6 might have less foot traffic as most will use the forward restroom. Thanks

There's an active 777 retirement thread, might be best to track them there: Delta to retire its entire Boeing 777 fleet by the end of the year
