Delta 777-200ER/LR Conversions to 7HD & 7HB. Pre-mods config is 37J/36W/218Y. For all the ERs and the first LR, post-mods config was initially 28J/48W/220Y (7HD/7HB). The post-mods config for all ERs and LRs is now 28J/48W/90Y+/122Y (7CD/7CB).

Window seat in row 2, 4 or 6. I usually go for 2A. Even number rows have the seats closer to the window while odd number rows have the seat closer to the door/aisle. Boarding is usually at Door 2 behind row 7 of the D1 cabin while lavs are at the front of the cabin.

The window seats on the odd numbers have the seat closer to the aisle, but conversely have a larger desk/table area. For me, that's more of a draw than distance from the aisle. A small thing to consider if that's important to an individual.

I personally prefer 6A, or at least one of the even number windows. I like being flush against the window and having that bit of space between the aisle (probably a result of my 767 flights). To me it feels a little quieter in 6 vs 2 because you're away from the lavatories and the forward galley.

Also, as angra mentioned, boarding/deplaning is typically at door 2. Depends which airport you're traveling to, but sometimes this will be the only door you deplane from, which makes the exit process for immigration a bit quicker if you're in 6 rather than 2. Some airports will have two jet bridges, however, so it won't matter in all cases.

Not the biggest difference either way.

So, if I'm right-handed, I'm better off in an A in 2, 4, or 6, giving me the console on the right between me and the aisle?

Can't say I've ever noticed a preference between left or right console. If I had to write something or do some activity that required precision, I would do it on the tray table in front of me rather than the console beside me. Maybe I just never thought about it

It’s a very minor thing and I would preference other things over it but I like having the console on my right side for placing a drink or snacks because I’m right handed and it’s more natural to grab my drink or snack with my right hand. I still place having the console between me and the aisle over this. So on a 767, I would prefer 1A over 1D. But I would still prefer 1D over 2D on the 767. Or if on a 2-2 set-up in F, I still place being on the aisle over where the center console is for placing drinks, but if the cabin is wide open, in F, I prefer the C seat over the B seat.

Slightly OT, but call it a tribute: saw on FB that this 2016 documentary of an AF 777 undergoing an overhaul is currently free on Prime Video:

Anyone have any idea when / what route the final flight will be on.

As far as I care, forget about the MD88/90s. The B777 leaving is far more serious.

I doubt DL even knows for sure which routes will operate this fall, much less which route will be the last 777 route

Some of Deltas LR's aren't very old (build in 2008 or newer). The only route that must be X'ed is ATL JNB, as the A350-900XWB's can handle all of the remaining trip 7 routes of Delta. Talk about a waist of money, Deltas long hall trip 7 aircraft just went through an internal cabin upgrade (within the last year or so) - That being said, is there a serious down sizing coming or was the B777's not that fuel efficient compared with the A350's? Time to rethink stock purchases then, I guess.

Per a Delta memo sent to pilots.

“With the retirement of the 777, we have made the decision to open two new bases in ATL and LAX. Enhancements to the 350 now allow it to operate key long-haul markets (SYD and JNB) at a lower operating cost than the 777.”

The "enhancements" refer to an upgrade to a 275 tonne MTOW version of the aircraft, along with newly redesigned wing tips. Delta's newest two A350s already have them. It will cost money for the upgrade, but it eliminates the need for the 77L to profitably operate LAX-SYD and ATL-JNB. I presume Delta will also take delivery of several 280 tonne MTOW A350s. These aircraft should be able to JNB-ATL without major restrictions, other than the belly of the aircraft won't be the same as when the 77L was operating the route. With the collapse of SAL, Delta will have all North America-ZA to itself, once Delta can confidently resume the route safely.

As for other fleet simplifications, the entire 717 fleet being parked permanently is still a serious possibility, along with all remaining 50 seaters. As per money spent on 777 modifications and stock repurchases, Delta, along with all the other major airlines/industries never saw this coming. A global downturn in a recession is one thing. A global pandemic is another.
