Given my size 13s, it is very difficult for me to go more than a couple days using a carry on.

I usually travel with one pair of shoes, but sometimes I get the crazy notion to actually visit the hotel workout room, so I bring a second pair. That notion quickly goes out the window once I arrive :p

All hotel charges are reimbursed so I almost always pack for 9 days and have my laundry done halfway through the trip.

I can imagine with larger shoes it would be extremely difficult to fit a lot more in a 22" rollaboard.

Random story

In college we used to call this hippy girl who was roommates with one of the girls in our clique Saskatoon. No one was ever really sure why (she was from Indiana).

But it was a lot of fun to say (especially whilst intoxicated), so the name stuck.

I'm surprised no one ever picked-up the nickname of salsa.

Same here. And 36" inseam pants take up a lot more space than shorter ones. I compare my pants in a bag to my partner's, and mine are always thicker when folded, because they have to be folded more times due to the length than his do.

I've also done the firefighter carry style for shoes...I'll take a backpack and tie my shoes around the bottom of a shoulder strap. Pull the laces in as tight as they'll go and tie all laces in one big knot with enough slack that they're comfortable there but not enough to make them swing like crazy. This works particularly well if you're a fan of carrying a backpack on one shoulder.

My client this week is doing a wonderful job of reminding me of all the reasons why I left life in rural Southeast Texas behind for good more than a decade ago. I can't get back to Houston fast enough tonight. And to think I have to come back here again next week.

Geez, how tall are you again?

Also, I have spent the past hour arguing about bartender's and barback's wages among friends. Granted I know there are a few upscale places where these people can make really nice $$$ but on AVERAGE how much do you think a bartender and barback make per year in NYC?

NYC bartending in the right place in the right neighborhood could probably be a high five figure job. As a slightly on-topic aside, I know many NYC concierge that live exclusively off of tips and commissions, and have their checks set to 100% 401K. And they live in Manhattan with such a setup.

when i worked as a bartender
We used to pay our bar back 10-20 % of the tips plus a shift pay
depending on the crowds and how hard he worked , he liked to slack a lot and that would lower his pay

I put myself through college (Upstate) bartending / backing. The answer is, it varies tremendously on the place. One of the places I worked at was strictly a nightclub and I'd make about 250-300 in tips between 8p and 3a Thursday - Saturday when it was "the" place. That was the most every made at a place on a consistent basis.

It fell out of flavor after a few months though and tips cycled down accordingly. Thankfully I graduated shortly there after.

I wouldn't be surprised if you could top 6 figures in Manhattan doing it f/t at the right place(s).

I know guys that would bartend the summers on HHH and the winters at ski resorts in CO. They claimed to pull in 150k / year. That's the way to do it.

Go to CO.com, plug in 2/6 for outbound IAH-NRT, 2/8 for return. See for yourself. Stunning.

If you click on the +/-3 day calendar, you'll see that it's Y fare for $4,000+ if you only stay in NRT overnight. If you come back 2/9 - 2/12, i.e. staying 2 to 5 nights, Q fares are in the $1,300s. Staying 6 nights or more, it's S fares in the $1,100s.

I knew a waiter at a steakhouse in ACY that claimed 85k on five nights a week. It wrecks your potential for relationships and a mainstream social life, but who cares when the money is that good?

rolov Oct 30, 2008 11:45 am

BTW
there is a place in Vegas called the Carnival Court @ Harrah's
where the bartenders flip bottles and do all sorts of crazyness , they pull in well over 100k easily a year
