Yes. Their soft-benefits were incomparable.

No kidding. Some of the State's base salaries are just average, if not below average, but the benefits are incredible. And then after two years you start accruing longevity pay in most full-time jobs, which adds up.

I'm a 13 or 14 depending on make, and if you don't already, rolling underwear and socks into shoes is a great pickup of what many people think is wasted volume.

Perhaps, although I am hoping for something cheap to AMS or FRA. Not much else really interests me at the moment.

I, too, am waiting for winter AMS prices to drop to a reasonable level. $750 is absurd.

Not to mention the 2200 for a non-refundable Y cabin to FRA next week.

Thankfully I'm up-front. But, still.

I checked IAH-NRT fares for 2/6-9 yesterday, just out of curiosity. $4,500 in coach.

Go to CO.com, plug in 2/6 for outbound IAH-NRT, 2/8 for return. See for yourself. Stunning.

Join me tomorrow in EWR, there's plenty of seats available (but no AVOD ). Last minute fare is Q class for $1,139.

Edit: I guess it may not be strictly last minute, yet, but whatever.

OMG, one of my clients e-mailed me about child support garnishments. They have hired an employee with 18 child support garnishments. Yes, that's right, 18! In three different states! Going to about 12 different courts!

Seriously, it's too bad they can't make getting a vasectomy a condition of his employment.

I'd love to, but I'm out of vacation time for the year. My next non-MR trip looks to be Saskatoon for Thanksgiving.

I take it you managed to sweet-talk a check-in agent into row 1 or 2 on a regional 773 flight where F is not sold, from a J award reservation? If so, any tips/hints for how best to accomplish that would be well appreciated, as our ICN-BKK flight will be just such a flight.

It was actually a 333. When I booked the reservation, they assigned me a random seat in J. I called up KE and said that I wanted to change my seat, asked for 1E, and they assigned it without issue. When we boarded the flight, six out of the 12 F seats were occupied (all J customers because F was not sold on that flight). There were only six people (KE elites, not J passengers) in J, so the FA's moved those six people up to F and closed down the J cabin to make the service easier for them. The meal service is the same as J, however; you just get 60" pitch instead of 42" pitch with basically the same seat.

I think KE started selling F in the ICN-BKK market, but am not positive. In that case, they won't move you up to F. If you are on a 773 with new J seats, it is even less likely that that they will move you up, but the new J seats are just fine. I would have to look at the KE timetable to see if there are any Busan flights that offer only C and Y but operate with three-cabin aircraft.

Well, it is Nawlins, which is second only to LAS in the USA in terms of "what happens there stays there." ;)

Much obliged for the offer. I think that I may suck it up and stay in the back to stare out the window for a bit, even if it's only the frozen tundra of Canada and Alaska. I never took photos in flight since my previous ULH trips always were at night (though a photo of Cairo would have been cool), so I may try that too (and if no one sees me, snap some during take off).

No one really seems to care about photos at takeoff/landing, at least in my experience. A pretty good FT collection of pictures from takeoff/landing can be found here.

My sister used to work for the State government. They got Holidays I never heard of. I think they were off for State and Federal holidays more often than they were working.

Try getting a job posted in a foreign embassy. They get all the US holidays and the local ones. Made for an interesting morning on President's Day '05 when we were trying to find someone to talk to about a lost passport three hours prior to our departure.

How does the guy even make money at that point?

I try and just bring one pair of shoes for a trip if I can. I will try to pack light and wash my clothes at the hotel to avoid the hassle of checking a bag. I have not my bag in about 6 years and I am damn proud of it:D. I have checked bags for my traveling companions’ because of the elite access tags, but not mine.

My next challenge will be to see if I am going to be able to do Hong Kong and China for 9 days with a carry-on.

I just did two weeks in Asia with a 22" rollaboard and a small Tumi shoulder duffle.

I have no idea. I'm not sure his gross pay is enough to really cover all of the garnishments. He's probably basically working to pay for health insurance, some taxes, his state-mandated retirement, and then a percentage of the child support. He probably has no net pay, or if he does, it's a very low amount.
