Agreed. Which is why I never shopped at Kroger or Winn-Dixie when I lived down South. Publx, Ukrops, and Harris Teeter all the way. I'd throw Wegmans into the mix but they're not really a southern brand (although I'm sure they carry grits. As we've discussed on here before, they carry everything).

Woohoo... OnePass Miles!!! The 50 or so I earn every time I go there makes me forget about the grey meat, horrible produce, and insanely high prices for things like toilet paper.

Plus, I think I'm done with Chase. I am so sick of their incompetence.

If you want to see a truly miserable grocery store, try the Associated just off 21st Street in Queens. I made the mistake of stopping in there once on the way to my then girlfriend/now wife's apartment. The produce was pretty bad but it was only when I got to the meat counter that I literally dropped the 2-3 things I had managed to find that weren't completely rotten and just booked it out of the store before I started vomiting. It was the most awful grocery experience of my life, and I grew up within a half mile of a Winn Dixie that was used for emergency shopping only.

My college roommate lives in Broadway about 1/8th of a mile from there. I've never been in, but I've heard stories.

There is, however, a fantastic street-meat vendor that hangs out on one of those corners. I'm usually in no state to remember which one exactly the next morning, but I always seem to find him the next time I'm down there... :o

I was first! Don't give them credit for the big Vinny reference.

Morning, Box! :D

My bad grocery experiences are limited to a local ShopRite that has rats, and an off-brand store around the corner from my house that is just nasty inside, yet enough local yokels go there to keep it in business...why I'll never know.

I saw a Winn Dixie in DAB in September - hadn't seen one in close to 15 years. I truthfully had no idea they were still in business.

We go out of our way to go to Publix or Whole Foods in Atlanta. There's a fairly new Kroger very close by, but trying to find anything in there is always a challenge, because the store is not well organized. And there's a lot of stuff they just don't seem to carry.

Of course we've both been traveling so much lately and have been so busy on weekends that we're eating out far more than we probably should be. We both like to cook but these days it just doesn't happen that often.

New Plane: MD-90

I have now flown the MD-90. And I can't say that I ever need to fly it again. If this plane was supposed to be an improvement over the MD-80, I'm not convinced. The overhead bins are smaller than those on DL's MD-88s, despite the MD-90 being a newer plane. They are really small, and only slightly larger than the bins on the EMB-170/190 series RJs. And then there's DL's Y seating arrangement, which crams everything in with what must be 30" pitch. Again, the smaller MD-88 is more comfortable. CO's standard Y seats have more knee room than DL's MD-90 does. Thankfully ATL-IAH is usually only about 90 minutes in the air, and we got off the ground quickly this morning at ATL, because two hours in that seat was the max I could stand.

Of course the experience could have been better had I not also had to experience the DL attitude. I try to like DL. I really do. But honestly, almost every time I fly them I encounter a snarky flight attendant, trying very hard to be cool (kind of like DL's safety video) but instead coming across as a total jerk. And yes, we had one today. He arrives at my row with the snack cart, looks at me and says "SNACK?" I said "Yes." He said "Whatchu want?" (Maybe they hired him from Colgan ground ops at IAH?) I responded, "What do you have?" Now, instead of politely telling me what the choices were, he replied with "We made an announcement earlier." And that was it. I said "I'm sorry, but I didn't hear it." The lady next to me says "I didn't either." And the guy next to her in the aisle seat said "Me either." The flight attendant lets out a loud sigh and says "We have the same thing we always have. Peanuts, Biscoff cookies, and cheese crackers. DO YOU WANT A SNACK, and if you do, WHAT DO YOU WANT?" I just said "Biscoff." And the package of cookies was npractically flung at me.

Now seriously, there's no need for the attitude. And like virtually every DC-9 and DC-9 descendant I've flown, this plane had a serious issue with PA announcements being inaudible at cruise. I did hear fragments of an announcement made by the flight attendants after we took off but you certainly couldn't understand most of it. The announcements made by the captain were worse. Sitting in row 36 of this plane and having a jet engine roaring less than two feet from my right ear didn't help either. I knew what DL normally offers, but this guy had set up the snack cart with only the peanuts on top, and I didn't know if that was all they had or not, since usually the top of the cart has a selection of snacks visible.

So I've flown the MD-90. And unless I'm booked into F, I doubt I'll fly it again.

And I really wish DL's flight attendants, especially the male ones, would leave the attitude at home.

Most Shop-Rite's here in NJ are dumpy. The one in Emerson is a filthy dump. The best newest one that I know of and shop in from time to time is in Lodi on Main st. Clean and new.

sdm1130 Oct 27, 2008 10:26 am

Many of the Shop Rite's out here in Western NJ are actually quite nice. The 150 OnePass miles for every $250 spent is a bit weak though.

When in FL, I am a big fan of Publix, Publix GreenWise and Whole Foods. ^

Shop Rite near my house is not that bad , it pretty new. I also visit Stop N Shop because the self service cashier lanes are always empty , people would rather wait in line and deal with a "person " rather than use the self service lane.

I like King's and Whole foods , but neither are convenient enough to me and both seem to be more expensive.
