The upside of boardshorts is that you'll have to pull harder to get thru the water. Drag = better burn.

Instead of a boardshort, you could try a more conventional bathing trunk. Cut out the embarrassing undie net, of course.

Now that I'm serious about this and am thinking about the logistics of it (my gym has a pool, so that's not the problem) what on earth do I wear? The only bathing suits I own are board-short type things, which are not exactly easy to swim in.

And I certainly don't want to go with the speedo look (not that I'm self-consciouses, but I really don't want to be that guy). :o

Can someone point me in the right direction? Perhaps the East river?

I swim 3-5 days a week at top speed ( Michal Phelps Esque) and unless you are competing you don't need a speedo , budgy smuggler or shark suit
just get a pair of good goggles and some boardshorts

Omni is now public and it has turned into a combination of Ancient Rome and Wild Wild West :

On behalf of everyone I will ever encounter in my gym in a bathing suit, I thank you.

Yes, nothing competitive except for lapping the 80 year olds. But, uhm, my main priority will be not sinking for the first couple of months.

It's been like that for a while. It really depends on when you buy your ticket that determines if H is refundable or not.

For instance, EWR-LAX/SFO there are two H fare rules. H1 and H7. H1 is a refundable with no advance purchase requirement. H7 is not refundable and has a seven day advance. The difference? I think it's close to $30 between the two.

That OMNIpublic thing really cheeses me.

In other news, the effort to empty my Hard Rock Cafe pin coffers tells me that according to the nominal values entered in the HardRock.com Pin Catalog, the Ziploc bag on my desk is worth a grand total of $889.10. That's a start. Proceeds are going in an online savings to cover assorted wedding-related things.

Obscure and absurdly confusing fare rules is one of the many reasons why airlines have so much trouble making money.

If only someone could operate an airline like a business!

Actually if you want to build up stamina and or not be very sore after the first time you swim , start with just kicks, you need a mini boogey board looking thing.
They usually have them at pools with lanes . That way you will just use you legs to kick your way down the pool while holding on to the floating board .
After that you are ready for the East River :D

I use swim in a pair of umbro shorts, though it has been quite a while now. The nice thing about them is that they dry pretty quickly, and they offer sufficient coverage. ;)

Woot has been having a woot-off today. Unfortunately work keeps getting in the way. They've had four or five things I wanted and in each case, as I've clicked the link to buy it, it's sold out. So I didn't get the micro-SD card for my phone (but it was only 2GB and I wanted a bigger one anyway), or the electronic meat thermometer my partner wanted for our kitchen that was about 60% off, or the really cool universal remote that was selling for about 75% off that I wanted.

And onto more CO related news, it looks like the 762s are back on the IAH-EWR schedule in November! Guess I'll have to sneak a few EWR connections into some work trips for the extra miles and better upgrade chances.

I was looking over an itinerary for a trip I have in mid-December and was trying to figure out why I booked a 4.5 hour connection in IAH (after coming in from EWR). I later realized that the EWR-IAH flight is on a 762.

Oh the things I'll do for an upgrade to a BF seat... I'll probably end up in the back anyway. :)

Yeah but at least in the back on the 762 is more comfortable than in the back on some of the other equipment that flies that route.

And this past Monday if my 752 had been a 762 I would have been upgraded.

I'm going to send you a mattress.

woot is the most absurd retail site on the web. I've never bought anything from it, but I love it!
