On the other hand, there was the trip where I consumed probably $50 worth of mini-bar liquor at the W New Orleans that they never charged me for. :D
Just finished reading the series of articles in the Washington Post regarding suburban teens and heroin addiction. Part 1. Part 2. The articles are absolutely heartbreaking. Heroin OD's are, by far, the most common call we have for our EMS service for patients between the ages of 15 - 30. More often than not we can bring the person back fairly easily through a drug that reverses the affects of the opiates. The parents always have the same expression on their face, whether it's the first OD or the 10th. A mixture of disbelief, denial, and shame. I can't even imagine what it must be like to see my teenage son or daughter face down on the floor surrounded by needles, cyanotic and in a drug induced slump. We do our best to provide them with information about services that are available but more often than not we go back to the same address the next week. And the week after. And every once in a while we'll pass by a residence that we used to frequent but haven't been to for a while. And we know, without actually knowing, what the inevitable outcome had to have been. It's a crazy drug. And I don't think the average person living in the suburbs understands how prevalent it is. Whether you're in NoVa, NY, NJ, or anywhere else. Sorry for the post. |

That's the kind of thing that makes class action lawyers' nostrils flare. Documented patterns of illegal or fraudulent behavior, the threat of federal RICO based filings, the vision of armies of expensive auditors combing the records = rapid settlement talks.

A perfect example of what an old friend referred to as the "condensation on the pipes." His meaning was that whenever the hot fluid of capital flows through a pipe, there is condensation (legal, accounting, capital market fees) that arises on the outside of the pipe, in amounts great enough to fund, for example, the current residents of the 'cottages' in the towns of southern Connecticut.

I am an e-discovery consultant and I shudder when I see some of the partner payouts this time of year, much less the six figure salaries for first years who are highly educated file clerks most of the time. These days I seem to be looking at more investigations rather than litigation as the corporations are holding back as much as they can before they move forward with discovery.

I'm done grading for the week, except those who lose a ton of points for not submitting by Monday's due date.
