If you come across the title, I'll give it a look, absolutely. I already read Intelligence Failure by David Bossie, and I keep picking up and putting down the books by Steve Coll. I tend to avoid any book that earns critical praise from the New York Times and has to do with current events or politics where I am not familiar with the author. I don't believe that the NYT building even has an objective piece of drywall in it.

CM, do you read fiction too, or just non-fiction?

The way to do that is to get a rent-stabilized apartment (if there are any left) and live in a tiny space. My wife and I lived on the Upper West Side for five years when I was a graduate student and she was a school teacher, and we made ends meet. Not having a car helped too.

We actually can live pretty well in a small space. Neither of us are the type to want tons of space that we just fill up with junk. As for the cars, right now two car payments, insurance, and gas run around $1,500-1,700/month. That right there is a big chunk of change that would be spent on other things if we had no cars. We are in the process of selling one of them (hopefully after this Saturday it will no longer be ours!!!), and going to one car, since it's so rare we actually need two cars. That will cut the car expenses in half immediately, even while we're still in Atlanta. Those savings will definitely be going to debt reduction and saving more.

Tow-in gates? Sounds like the writers had flown into LAX a few too many times.

I read very little fiction. Probably less than 1 in 10. I used to read James Patterson because I liked the Alex Cross character, then I realized that Patterson was using the same plot devices with different names and locations. That is lazy writing and is therefore unacceptable.

I have read every book in the Mitch Rapp series by Vince Flynn. They keep me up at night - I can usually knock out 500 pages of Flynn in under 24 hours.

I also read Stuart Woods because I simply adore the Stone Barrington character, and his other character series...Holly Barker has been fun to read, as has Ed Eagle. If I could be Stone, I would.

I have been meaning for a while to give Carl Hiassen a try. Bought his first book in DAY last year and really enjoyed it, but fiction just does not crack the priority list. Hiassen did do a memoir of sorts that revolved around his return to golfing so he could play with his grandson, and I can only imagine what his sense of humor reads like when applied to golf. The subtitle is, IIRC, "a hacker's return to a ruinous game". :D

This recent B&N purchase lowered the number of titles on my wishlist to 19. It's never been lower than about 15 because I keep finding stuff I want to read about.

In Penalty Box Book Club news, if there is anyone who has not read Martyn Gregory's story of how BA tried repeatedly and failed miserably to screw over Richard Branson and close down VS, I should be getting it back from cruisr soon. I may read it again before giving it out because like the book monitor has right now, House of Mondavi, it is just that good.

Why is Delta sending you a gift?

No Frog Legs, in fact I dont think I have ever had any. Delta is sending me a Tiffany Bowl because they value my Business as a mooch! When in fact all I really wanted from NWA/DL was a NWA platnium card the last year they were around.

so sfogate did you share any candy? :)

Delta Bribe will be used to place my CO boarding passes! :)

I went to the store tonight to get apple jelly, been craving PB&J lately. I was by the freezer section and looking for the Blue Bell Praline Ice cReam and was very disappointed to not see it in the freezer! :( But good in that it meant the 1:30 minutes in the gym tonight was still going positive for me.

So it looks like I am headed to OKC on Tuesday to get a Chase Checking account and 25,000 tasty miles! Hmmm... do I have a coupon to open a Chase account somewhere??

I'm impressed, and a little envious. I can't really read non-fiction anymore. (Not that I read much fiction, either...)

One author you might like -- if you want to go old school -- is Ross Thomas. Cold War intrigue with a wicked sense of humor. My dad has a bunch of his books and I always read them when we are visiting there.

Did you ever read James Kaplan's book about JFK (the airport, not the president)?

What did DL match your CO Plat to?

Why thank you. :) I've always looked at reading as a learning tool, while others see it as escapism. Whatever floats whoever's boat. <shrug>

In order, yes and no. I'd consider an old-school Cold War fiction writer, because I read every book but for The Sum of All Fears in the Jack Ryan universe. I gave The Sum of All Fears a fair shot, but I'm not a particularly religious guy and the references to dogma and such were too much for me...I understand that Clancy was trying to explain motivations for the Israeli will to survive and their subsequent need to join the nuclear club, but I just said that and made it understandable without invoking or citing a holy book of any kind. @:-)

I have not read very much about JFK in general...I have read Seymour Hersh's book and C. David Heymann's book on Bobby, and there is a Jackie bio sitting on my desk that I bought and am for some reason avoiding. I've had a recent fascination with (oddly enough) Israeli military and political reading. I read Raid on the Sun at sfogate's recommendation, and I just picked up what is considered to be the best unofficial history of Mossad. After I get through this pile, I'm ordering the two books that I have found that make a good effort at explaining the life and times of Billy the Kid, and in that order will be the start of my readings on the Little Bighorn.

I should say that I'm a believer in Asian astrology, and my astrological info conveys this very trait about my sign and birth. My particular type of sign are known to be nonstop readers and essentially information sponges.

UA: PHL-SEA-PDX-SEA-PHL or PHL-SFO-PDX-SFO-PHL and probably many more creative routings because its UA. $140 a/i. I couldnt find same day weekend turns but I found Friday-Saturday turns and Saturday-Monday turns in October. Ex dates - 10/30-10/31.

Let me know if you see any weekend routings Sat-Sun?

Is this a fabled Q-Up? I might be up for doing this if you want the company....If the overnight was there, I'd suggest SEA so a quick trip to Vancouver could be a possibility. Since that's not the case, if the layover is long enough, a visit to sfobaggage could be in order.

ConciergeMike Oct 8, 2009 9:59 pm

It doesn't sound like a Q-Up - too cheap and not enough segments. Oh, that reminds me - I'll go get you that citation on LBJ pulling his hoohoo out.

CO PL = NWA PL = DL PL

My statement I sent in had me at 119,000 miles at the time. Should have waited to see if 125K would have gotten me the better DL level. Oh Well!
