That's generally fine - the point is one understands the concepts. References exist for a reason. Best of luck.

Where did you start and what's your goal?

Let's say that I started in the 220's on July 27 ... Goal by the end of year (e.g. December 2009) was to get below 200 (the round number). And the more immediate goal was to get well below Alli weight before ZRH (my birthday).

Thanks. That is my hope as well. The first question was what is a /24, and I responded that it was a 24 bit subnet. He asked how many hosts are in it and I replied 254. He then asked the same question about a /25. I responded that I couldn't do it in my head but I know exactly where to look online to have it calcuated for me (http://www.subnet-calculator.com/). Hopefully that was ok.

:D
/25 is half of a /24 and /26 half of that :D

but alas, I deal with this daily and know it like the back of my hand, its easy to come by after you get used to it.

Half - 1? I had forgotten that completely.

It depends, per specs and most switches it is -1, but certain extreme switches allow you to manipulate the subnets and not need the normal gateway ip and broadcast IP....however it makes for a PAIN when you switch to cisco or other switches as I know first hand.

This is why enterprise rollouts should be based on standards and not vendor suggestions. :)

Let's just say I did my MCP on NT 4 and have been out of tech for 6 years. I would be next to useless in networking.

Oh yea I know, and luckily our subnets were fully compliant using cisco gear from the start, but we merged some other companies gear into ours and their ip space, it was  At the end of the day had to dedicated almost an entire /24(actually containing smaller subnets) extra in 'overhead' to clear up the servers that were IPless with the changes done.
