I had not noticed that (although I only usually purchase premium wines at hubs).

My plan is to grab an iPhone 3G the day they come out but not a single Apple employee can give me specifics about whether or not I can purchase the phone in L.A. and get a Houston number or not.

Just wishing I knew how the sales portion was going to happen.

I am also planning on picking up a 3G iPhone on 7/11. The lack of information is pretty normal for new Apple product releases - the 1st gen iPhone release was the same way. The Apple and AT&T employee training is usually not done until a few days before the release and customers are left pretty clueless until then.

Since the phone is supposedly not going to be sold online and will need to be activated in store, it might be tough to get a Houston number in LA. Although, there have also been rumors that you'll be able to go to an AT&T store days before the release to get a dormant contract that will be turned live wen you purchase the iPhone on the 11th. Who knows what will happen...

Personally, I am just dreading the lines on the release day. I have an existing contract and was hoping to just order online and have it arrive a few days later. I'll either have to wait in line on the 11th or just wait a few days until the crowds (and hopefully not the inventory) die down.

What is the hook for the iPhone? Maybe it's just me, but around here the AT&T/Cingular signal sucks, so I have no desire to switch from Verizon. I still don't get what is so great about it.

I don't foresee this being a problem. What would make the iPhone any different than procuring any other type of cell-phone in terms of assigning it a number?

In other news, I just discovered my downfall. It's a sandwich which has chicken cutlet (fried), meatballs, 2 mozzarella sticks (fried), covered in marinara and then topped with some sort of white cheese. All on a submarine roll. :D

Well, I have Sprint right now and the signal is awful.

I hear that from many people, but I've never had any problem with the signal anywhere in the US. I had Verizon for many years and I see no difference between AT&T and Verizon.

The appeal of the iPhone? It's a music player, phone and Internet device all in one very slick and easy to use package. The interface is by far the best I have ever seen on a cell phone. I agree though, it is not for everyone.

I tried to do this a few years ago and was told that they did not have access to the billing system for my local area and therefore could not set up a new account. Maybe cell providers have figured this out and have nationwide systems now...

Upside: Something like that will soak up alcohol.
Downside: It'll kill you performing the upside.

For the first couple of years at my current position, we had Cingular/AT&T phones. Mind you, I drive - a lot! I cover an area from AC to Cape May to Newark, Delaware to ABE to Reading to New Hope. Pretty much a 17 county area spanning South/Central Jersey, Philadelphia, its suburbs, the 2 most northern counties of Delaware, The Lehigh Valley... you name it. I can compare signals. We've since switched to Verizon due to too many dropped calls. There were places in the pine barrens we couldn't get signals with AT&T, but those same places, I would get excellent signals w/ Verizon. My personal phone is T-Mobile, and their signal (in the northeast) isn't as good as Verizon (IMO).

Question for the group: A friend of mine and I went up to "The Top of the Rock." I wasn't able to get a signal on my work Verizon phone or my T-Mobile phone. I didn't hear other phones ring or see people on the phones. What's the deal with no signal up that high?

This should clean out your GI tract. Just be armed with lots of toilet paper and Lysol.

The antennae often are angled down to cover people on the street and in cars. I have a client on the 46th floor of a building a couple blocks west of there and we can only get coverage by the windows for similar reasons. It is annoying, to say the least.

Also, TMo had some serious issues in that area with coverage a couple years back. They used to constantly drop data connections and leech the spectrum to cover their voice calls. I believe they finally added an additional location or two to help out on that front.

Im on the 30th floor on 5th and 42nd st and we have the same problem. I also work on a trading floor designed space so I dont even get to see windows unless I go to the big mans office or one of the conference rooms. The blackberry service is also speratic up there and around 2 pm everyday I get about 40 emails that I had already received on my desktop in the AM.

I may never get back to IAH. My DFW-IAH flight was supposed to depart at 7:10 PM. It's now scheduled to depart at 10:43 PM. I *might* get back to Houston before midnight tonight. Or maybe not.
