The other half and I were sinking about a weekend in BOS, and we don't want to drive...we looked at Amtrak, NK, and WN. WN was the winner by a longshot, and Amtrak was embarrassingly expensive. Why, when I have easy access to BWI, would I pay 5x as much for a journey that is 3x as long?
WN: $39+$59+taxes/fees x2 on BWI-BOS, 90 minute flight Amtrak Acela Biz: $594 a/i for two people on PHL-BOS, 5-hour ride Uh, guess who wins that one. I now know why the US has no prudent passenger rail system. Anyone taking the train from Baltimore to Boston would have to love train travel, given the presence of WN and FL at BWI. But coming from where you are, isn't it a 2-1/2 hour drive to BWI? It's over 2 hours for me from the Western Philly suburbs. So really the trip from chez CM or fiancee to BOS is closer to 5 or 6 hrs door to door, depending on how early you want to get to the airport, where you park, where you are going in Boston, etc. A fairer comparison is flying PHL-BOS, where if you buy your plane ticket enough in advance it's cheaper than Amtrak but otherwise Amtrak saves money. There are several threads in the US f:rolleyes:rum complaining about this route. On the rare occasions I go to BOS on business, I will always consider the train, since it takes only about an hour longer door-to-door (I can get off at the BBY station which is a block from the hotels where I usually stay) and costs 1/3 as much. I also get more work done on the train, if that is a consideration. Even Acela F is cheaper than a non-refundable, non-weekend stay plane ticket from PHL to BOS. |
I have to find out if I can change my driver's license to have my full name on it for this new TSA Exact Name on ID edict. My DL just has my first 2 initials instead of having my name spelled out.
Went hiking today with my dog...up and down a gorge. I predict soreness tomorrow. |

It's true that Amtrak is not really set up for leisure passengers on their "high-speed" services beyond the Washington-NYC corridor (though I think weekend advanced-purchase fares are much more competitive than they used to be). Real high-speed rail (as in Western Europe or Japan) with leisure-oriented fares would be a winner, but no one wants to subsidize Amtrak to that extent.

Success....battlefield upgrades for both of us. We cleared T-30 min and a person was nice enough to trade with her so we could sit together. This makes me (i think) 20% for companion upgrades oon the year. The system's still broken but I guess all hope is not lost. This is my first transcon since the full service was reinstituted. Time to shut off the phone and chill. Have a good day box. |

I got want I wanted, my son is enrolled in a summer school class. It only took three trips to visit them in person, multi phone calls of which 0 were returned and about 2 hours of my time. I heard one story from the District Office and a completely opposite one from the summer school ladies.

More the reason to put my friend on the list when we head to SEA at the end fo the month before heading to NRT which is all upgraded except her last leg... Mine is fine :)! I have enjoyed traveling with friends and family and when the companion upgrade doesnt happen I just give them drink coupons and such, but when I find my partner in the future that person better be elite or else ! (I am almost half the way to Silver for Life so can't complain much) |
I am installed at the Aloft Las Calinias in Dallas. It's nice enough.
