I stopped by EWR to check in on the AA kiosk this evening and I noticed it said "group 6" so I guess they do things like WN?

Yup, unless you have status of course but at least you know where you are sitting before you get on the plane.

Yeah - I make a point of only flying SkyTeam and *A (because I have status on both) unless burning off AA miles for an award in "F".

UA, US and DL also do boarding zones rather than by row numbers. Passengers rarely paid attention to the "board when your row number is called" announcements and they pay slightly more attention to the HUGE number in the middle of the BP. But only slightly.
